The works as part of the first regulation project at the Yehiam quarry are expected to be completed this summer, with the aim of reducing as much as possible the chance of extreme flooding events.

Extreme weather events in Israel have intensified in recent years due to the global climate crisis.

One of the manifestations of this in Israel is the repeated flooding of the Ga'aton River in Nahariya.

The last severe event, which was very severe, occurred in early 2020. Between January 9-7, then extreme rainfall events led to the rise of the Ga'aton River level, which caused great damage to property and even claimed the life of the late Motti Ben Shabbat.

The disaster and the death of the late Ben Shabbat led to a government decision to formulate a comprehensive plan to protect the city from floods. Strategies along the route of the stream: These are three projects: the first in the Yehiam quarry, the second in the Asherat quarry and the third in the areas of Kibbutz Evron.

The cost of the entire program is NIS 150 million, and now the ministry has entered Phase B, which is the construction of a dam in Nahal Asherat with a total cost of about NIS 30 million.

As part of the regulation project in Nahal Asherat, a dam will be built about 350 meters long and about 15 meters high.

At the bottom of the dam will be installed a pipe with a regulated gate for the transfer of controlled flood water flow which will help manage and prevent the formation of floods.

The function of the regulation sites is to collect the flood water for several days, and to release them gradually after the flood has passed.

This way you can moderate the amount of water that is spilled into the city despite the heavy rains.

In this context, the work as part of the first regulation project at the Yehiam quarry is expected to be completed during the coming summer, before the rainy season in Israel begins and in order to reduce as much as possible the chance of extreme flooding events.

The third regulation project in the areas of Kibbutz Evron is currently in advanced planning stages.

The works in Nahal Oshrat are part of a broad move in an unprecedented financial investment led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in order to optimally prepare for the expected consequences of the global climate crisis and reduce the effects of floods and flooding in urban and rural areas.

Thus, the ministry recently signed an agreement with the Ministry of Finance and the Israel Land Authority, which allocates an unprecedented additional amount of NIS 1.2 billion to promote 13 essential projects for development-supporting drainage infrastructure throughout the country;

In addition, together with the Planning Authority, the ministry has formulated the "TMA-Floods", a new national master plan that, for the first time in Israel, will define and preserve Israel's hydrological infrastructure.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Oded Forer: "We act out of a deep commitment to the security of the people of Israel and invest considerable resources in order to provide a long-term solution to the consequences of climate change in general, and to floods and floods." "We are unprecedented to treat it. Now, we continue to work with all our might to eradicate these phenomena and allow the citizens of Israel to sleep well even during the stormy winter months."
