The reality of the preparatory year for medical colleges, the mechanism of admission, the curricula and the various aspects related to them, the most prominent of what the participants discussed in the workshop organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research today in the auditorium of Damascus University.

The participants in the workshop made presentations aimed at evaluating the preparatory year for medical faculties (medicine, dentistry and pharmacy), which was adopted as a second criterion for university admission in addition to the average of the general secondary certificate in the 2015-2016 academic year, during which students are subjected to a unified and automated central examination, noting that the number of its students In public universities, it is estimated that there are about 10 thousand students.

The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Bassam Ibrahim, indicated that the preparatory year was a necessity at one stage, especially in light of the conditions of the war that Syria went through, and it is important, after years of its adoption in the higher education system, to evaluate and study its reality from all positive and negative aspects and related difficulties. It is done with those concerned in universities, medical colleges, the National Union of Syrian Students and the Ministry of Education in order to come up with proposals and recommendations to be put forward later in the Higher Education Council and the University Absorption Committee in a way that serves the interest of students and achieves their aspirations.

Minister of Education, Dr. Darem Tabbaa, explained that the ministry seeks, through its plans and decisions, to build high school graduates according to the approved scientific foundations, based on participatory educational work with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. International standards and indicators.

Member of the Executive Office of the National Union of Syrian Students, Head of the Studies and Student Issues Office, Imad Al-Omar, gave a presentation on the reality of the preparatory year and all related issues, through an opinion poll that included 2,145 students from the preparatory year and medical specialties, the percentage of lecture attendance, the reasons for absence from theoretical lectures and the justifications for the preparatory year The special courses and the circumstances surrounding them, in addition to reviewing some international experiences of accepting students in medical colleges through data received from the union’s foreign branches.

The workshop also included presentations on the impact of the preparatory year program on medical college students, as well as issues related to the preparatory year in private universities.

The workshop was attended by the President of Damascus University, Dr. Muhammad Osama Al-Jabban, the President of the National Union of Syrian Students, Dareen Suleiman, the Secretary of the Damascus University branch of the Arab Socialist Baath Party, Dr. Khaled Al-Halbouni, the Teachers Syndicate, Waheed Al-Zaal, a number of heads of public and private universities, deans of medical colleges and members of the People’s Assembly.
