After heavy fighting, the Russian army controls most of Sievarodonetsk.

Only the industrial area is still in Ukrainian hands.

This was announced by the governor of the Luhansk region, Serhiy Hajday, in his Telegram channel on Wednesday.

The regional governor had previously described the defense of Sieverodonetsk as a "mission impossible".

According to a lawyer for Ukrainian magnate Dmytro Firtash, around 800 civilians are holed up in shelters at the Azot chemical plant in Sieverodonetsk.

The plant belongs to Firtash's company DF Group.

"Among those 800 civilians are about 200 of the 3,000 workers at the factory and about 600 residents of Sieverodonetsk," US Attorney Lanny Davis said.

The employees stayed to secure the "highly explosive chemicals" on the premises.
