“We are defending our positions, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy.

“In many ways, the fate of our Donbass is decided there,” he said.

Ukraine also called on Thursday for “long-range” Western artillery weapons.

According to kyiv, these weapons would make it possible to quickly retake Sieverodonetsk.

"In 2 or 3 days", according to the governor of the Luhansk region, Sergei Gaïda.

On Telegram, Sergei Gaïdaï, added that street fights were in progress and that the evacuations of civilians were impossible this Thursday.

Some 800 residents are trapped in the city's Azot chemical plant, where they have taken refuge, according to the lawyer of a Ukrainian tycoon whose company owns the installation.

The Ukrainian authorities have not confirmed this information.

Russian forces now control much of this strategic eastern city.

However, Russian forces are regaining ground.

The situation is more complicated in other parts of Donbass.

The nearby town of Lysychansk is fully controlled by the Ukrainian army but is under "heavy" shelling, said Sergey Gaidai, governor of the Luhansk region, accusing Russian forces of "deliberately" targeting hospitals and drug distribution centers. 'humanitarian aid.

In the city of Bakhmut, a school was completely destroyed on Wednesday by a bombardment, burnt books being visible among the rubble, according to AFP journalists.
