Why doesn't car sharing catch on?

The members of “Stattauto Isarwinkel” got to the bottom of this question at the annual meeting.

Bad Tölz – There was a great deal of guesswork at the annual meeting of “Stattauto Isarwinkel” in the Binderbräu inn: The question that the around 15 members present asked themselves: Why isn’t the idea of car sharing prevailing in Bad Tölz?

Why did the club have to reduce its vehicle fleet from four to two cars?

"I find it amazing that carsharing is not used," said one member.

"If I look at the general political climate, the number of our cars should double - and not halve."

More people would have to do without their own car

Treasurer Erich Zimmermann painted a bleak picture of the club's financial situation.

In the Corona year 2020, there were sometimes only four car bookings per month.

"We would need 1,000 euros in sales per month to be able to pay for everything." Without a few thousand kilometers of journeys and donations, it would have looked "really bad", in his words: "We are on the brink.

We need more customers who are willing to give up their own car and go on holiday in their own car.” Nevertheless, Zimmermann recommended: “We should definitely not give up car sharing.” Especially since there has recently been an upward trend in bookings was.

The two cars drove almost 23,000 kilometers last year - significantly less than before Corona, but twice as much as in 2020.

Car service for seniors is well received

The annual report by chairwoman Ulla Schneiders went in a similar direction: "Many of our members are doing what you want to achieve with car sharing: that fewer cars are driven." In order to plug the financial gap, "Stattauto Isarwinkel" decided to set up a car service offer for seniors.

There are now nine volunteer drivers who drive seniors to go shopping, to the doctor and to visit relatives.

"They wait until the seniors are done," Schneiders said.

"That's why we're not in competition with the taxi industry." The club is "on the right track" with this offer, and there is brisk demand: "Some are quite surprised that, for example, excursions to Jachenau are possible with us.

But we're not the Red Cross, which only transports patients."

Increased gas prices are also causing prices for car use to skyrocket

Due to the rise in petrol prices, however, it is necessary to increase the prices for car use.

The price per hour increases from 1.90 to 2.10 euros.

The provision fee increases from four to six euros per month.

The price per kilometer driven increases by three to 35 cents and 40 cents depending on the car selected.

Is the cost structure too complex?

The members discussed at length the lack of interest in car sharing among the residents of Tölz.

One member speculated that the cost structure might be too complex for some.

There is an admission fee, a deposit, a club fee, a monthly user fee, a time tariff and a kilometer fee: “Of course everything has to be paid for in the end.

But there must be some way to simplify the model.”

A suitable location for the vehicles was discussed

For example, you could combine the club and the provision contribution.

Ulla Schneiders agreed to take a look at the price structure: "But that's a lot of work." The locations of the vehicles were also discussed.

The Opel Karl is at the train station, the Opel Corsa at Höhenbergweg.

"For many Tölzer, the Höhenbergweg feels like it's at the end of the world," admitted Schneiders.

The car used to be in the parking lot at the city library, but there was regular parking damage there.

In addition, the parking space reserved for “Stattauto” was often occupied by other cars.

Opel will soon be replaced by Mazda

Therefore, the choice fell on private property on Höhenbergweg: “Three users live there within a radius of 50 meters.

They almost pay the cost of the car themselves.” Schneiders hopes that the income from the senior citizens' car service will give the association the opportunity to purchase a third car.

This could be located in the center of the Stadtwerke car park: "There is already a safe for the car key and a sign - the car park is waiting for us." It is clear that there will be a change in the vehicle fleet: the Opel Karl will be coming soon replaced by a Mazda 2.
