Five years of planning and four years of conversion are over: The Rewe Center in the Geiselbullach district of Olching, which was completely renovated and modernized for 25 million euros, has now officially opened.

Olching – According to the company, with 11,000 square meters it is the largest Rewe market in all of Germany, including the most extensive fish department.

Eight e-charging stations for electric cars and one for e-bikes are among the other innovations.

Seven construction phases and "again and again something like time travel between renovated and unrenovated parts", as architect Thomas Riesenegger called it - no small feat even for a company worth billions.

"The entire conversion period was extremely sporty," explained Volker Hornsteiner, CEO of the Rewe Region South.

Germany's largest Rewe opens after renovation: "It shouldn't have taken much longer"

Dust protection walls had to be rebuilt again and again to protect the parts of the store that were currently being kept in operation.

According to Hornsteiner, this meant constantly changing processes and new paths for the employees.

He expressly emphasized that the staff would have gone along well.

Nevertheless, the company and the market management had to keep motivating them again and again.

From this, Hornsteiner drew the conclusion: "The conversion should not have taken much longer." However, a continuous closure of the store for a year was never an alternative.

Rewe in Geiselbullach: Exactly the right time

The company also had luck on its side in relation to the Corona crisis and the Ukraine war, as the opening was able to take place almost exactly at the planned time.

According to Hornsteiner, if construction had started later, it would certainly not have been possible in terms of time and money.

But there will probably no longer be a Rewe of this size in Germany anytime soon, precisely because of the current situation.

Rewe in Geiselbullach: Less non-food - "No competition with local shops"

According to market manager Markus-Stefan Radelzhofer, the greatest need for renovation was in the former garden center.

Much more space has been allocated to the food and drugstore areas compared to the past.

The non-food range such as clothing, shoes or games has been significantly reduced.

"We're not looking for any competition with the local shops," said Radelzhofer during a tour of the market.

Nevertheless, he described it as important that the small entrepreneurs located within the market area "supported the conversion and took the financial risk themselves".

Long-term leases were offered to give the company security.

Olching's Mayor Andreas Magg spoke of an excellent overall work that could already be described as a reopening.

"I also associate personal memories with it," he said and briefly talked about party shopping for his 18th birthday.

Pastor Josef Steindlmüller, who gave the blessing alongside his evangelical colleague Harald Sauer, even spoke of the city's third landmark - alongside the two main churches.

In view of the range of more than 45,000 items, Steindlmüller remarked with a slight smile: "I don't want to take on a challenge about who has more visitors."(
