In the case of the knife attack at the Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences, there are indications that the alleged perpetrator was mentally ill.
The 34-year-old should therefore be examined by a psychiatrist on Saturday, as a spokesman for the Dortmund public prosecutor's office told the German Press Agency on Friday evening.
There is no evidence of a political background or accomplices.
Hamm - Four people were injured in the attack on Friday afternoon, some of them seriously.
One of the victims, a woman, had an emergency operation and was in acute danger of death, the prosecutor said.
The 34-year-old was overpowered by students and held until police officers arrested him.
He lived in a student residence, the spokesman said.
The apartment had been searched.
