David Brog, who is vying to become the Republican representative in the fight for a seat in the US Congress, says of his second-degree cousin: "He was my hero even before we knew we were close" • He says the biggest danger to the West comes from the US: "The Democratic Party The ideas of the extreme left "

Will Ehud Barak soon have a cousin in the US Congress?

In the state of Nevada in the western United States, the results of the Republican Party's primaries will be announced on Wednesday morning on its candidates for Congress.

This internal race is interesting from an Israeli angle, as one of its most prominent contenders is Adv. David Brug, a Las Vegas resident and a second-degree cousin of the former prime minister.

The 56-year-old Brug has a rich past in activities for Israel.

Since 2015, he has been the head of the "Maccabi" task force to combat the boycott movement on Israel (due diligence: the organization is partly funded by the Adelson family, the publisher of "Israel Today"). The Christian Union for Israel and even authored a book that won a great deal on the Judeo-Christian Alliance.

Brog is proud of the family connection to his famous cousin, who only in 1972 changed his last name to "Barak".

He said that as a result of the events of World War II, the family did not keep in touch for many years, and only during his time as an adviser to the Senate, in the 1990s, did he learn through a family member about being close to the Israeli prime minister.

"Ehud was my hero even before I knew we were relatives. We have a common picture from his visit to the Senate as prime minister in 1999, and I am very proud of her," says Brug.

Brog is married to Hila, an Israeli from Netanya, and they have two children, Jacob and Zohar.

In a digital interview from his home in Las Vegas, he tells "Israel Today" that he and his wife make sure to talk in Hebrew at home.

It competes in Nevada's No. 1 district, which includes central Las Vegas and areas in the east of the state.

Opposite him in the race are seven other contestants, the winner of which will run against the longtime member of the Democratic House of Representatives, Dina Titus.

According to local press estimates, Brog is among the leading candidates in the primaries, among other things after reaching third place in fundraising for the election campaign.

"Some see Israel as an apartheid state"

"It's going well. It's very exciting and challenging and from what we understand the situation is good, I'm optimistic," says Brug in Hebrew.

He said he decided to run for a seat in the House of Representatives because he believes the most serious danger facing the United States today comes from home.

"If you had asked me five years ago what the greatest danger is to the free world, to the United States and Israel, I would have told you that this is radical Islam, but today I think the greatest danger is here at home, and it has implications for Israel."

He added: "If we can not educate our children that America is a great country, that is the last hope for the human race, we will lose the benefits of America, and the world will lose one of its foundations of defense. The Democratic Party has been taken over by the far left. It also affects the way they see Israel, because those extremists say that Israel is an apartheid state. Both academia and the education system in America are controlled by people who question their perceptions. One example that illustrates these ideas is the call to stop funding the police. "The biggest sufferers are the weak, which the left pretends to protect. These are dangerous ideas and I want to be in a place where I can stop them."

The BDS movement has published a map of the "scores in the Boston area."

Against the background of what you just described, how do you see this map?

Brog: "It's one step in a dangerous process we've seen before. Once you start delegitimizing someone, it ends in violence."

How did it happen that your famous cousin is one of the most prominent left-wing leaders while you are running for a right-wing party?

"First of all, Ehud is still the most decorated soldier in IDF history.

So respect, period.

Second, until he was elected prime minister, I also believed in a 'two state solution'.

Only as a result of what he was trying to achieve and was violently rejected by the Palestinians, in the second intifada, did I realize I was wrong.

"The Palestinians are not ready to accept the two-state solution, so I do not blame him for the attempt."

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
