A Mexican judge confirmed on Friday June 10 the

The judge ruled on a complaint by the association Justicia Justa against bullfighting in the Mexican capital.

He had already ordered a provisional suspension on May 27, the time to listen to the arguments of each other.

Bullfighting circles claimed that they would continue their

"legal defense"

of

"Mexican customs and traditions"

.

In addition to a tradition that dates back to the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, bullfighting circles highlight their economic weight (343 million dollars and 80,000 jobs in 2018, according to the latest official figures available).

The examination of their possible appeal could take months.

The decision of the federal judge will therefore most certainly lead to the cancellation of the next show scheduled for July 2, the “Pamplonada”.

It is a release of bulls in the surroundings of the bullring, similar to the San Fermin of Pamplona in the north of Spain.

Proponents of prohibition believe the law treats bulls as

"things"

and ignores animal suffering.

In December, the local Congress of Mexico City had banned bullfighting shows, without a vote in plenary session.

Five of Mexico's 32 states have already banned such shows.

The debate exists elsewhere in Latin America.

It is forbidden to kill the bull in Bogota and Quito.

Venezuela has canceled some bullfights.

In Peru, the court ruled against the ban.

Bullfights are permitted in Portugal, Spain and France, where the debate also exists.

"75% of French people are for the prohibition of bullfighting"

, according to the explanatory memorandum of a bill for the prohibition dated September 2021 on the site of the French Senate.
