At speed, Wolfgang Sacher rushes up from behind in the final sprint, but then a competitor swerves and Sacher has to brake sharply.

As a result, the hoped-for medal is gone by three hundredths.

Cologne/Wolfratshausen – Victory in sight – and in the end just over.

This is what happened to Wolfgang Sacher last Sunday at the German Championships in disabled cycling.

The 2008 Paralympics winner had a good tactic in mind: Coming from behind with a lot of momentum, he wanted to attack from behind his opponent's slipstream in order to be able to overtake the competition in the last meters.

A plan that almost worked.

"But only almost," says Sacher.

“When I was at the same height, a driver suddenly swerved next to me and pushed me into the barrier.

I immediately had to brake hard and I totally lost my speed advantage," continues the Penzberger, thus providing the explanation

The end result of the 50-kilometer road race shows how good Sacher's chances of winning a medal were: Despite the braking maneuver in the final meters, the chairman of the RSC Wolfratshausen finished fourth and missed the bronze medal by just three hundredths of a second.

“It's no secret that I was pretty pissed at the finish.

If my opponent had held his line, I would have won a medal.”

deficit in the time trial

For Sacher, the German Paracycling Championships were the highlight of a nearly six-week competition phase since the end of April.

After good placings at the World Cup races in Belgium and Germany and a strong fifth place at the European Championships in Austria two weeks ago, the 55-year-old wanted to qualify for a starting place at the World Championships in Canada in August with a podium finish - an undertaking, however, that he did faced difficult conditions in the 20-kilometer time trial on Saturday.

“My legs hadn't recovered well from sitting in the car for so long the day before, I noticed that as soon as I warmed up.

As a result, things didn’t go so well in the race,” says Sacher, who nevertheless achieved the second-fastest time in his C4 racing class.

“Unfortunately, my direct competitor for the World Cup ticket, Thomas Schäfer, was 22 seconds faster.

I was even better at the European Championships, but cycling can go that fast,” was Sacher's sober conclusion.

World Cup ticket now far away

In the road race on Sunday, the 55-year-old was out for redemption and drove an active race from the start.

“I must have attacked four or five times.

But on the flat track no one was able to pull away decisively.

The decision then came in the sprint, in which I always have a disadvantage with one arm compared to two-armed athletes," said Sacher, who nevertheless did well in the final - and thanks to his tactical trick of attacking from behind with excess speed, almost even landed a surprise coup.

"Had, had a bicycle chain - unfortunately that doesn't count in sport.

Fourth place is of course thankless, but I showed everyone that I'm still capable of good performances at the age of 55.

Even if the World Cup ticket is now of course a long way off,”

Cooperation with former sponsor

However, he does not want to be defeated by the likely missed participation in the Paracycling World Championships in Canada in August, although the nomination will not take place until July.

Instead, the RSC boss is concentrating on his next sporting steps.

“2022 is only my first real season after almost ten years of competition break.

I still have a lot of work to do - from training to materials," says Sacher, who wants to work more closely with his former sponsor, the Penzberg entrepreneur Ernst-Otto von Drachenfels and his company Nutridual-Nutritional Supplements.

Sacher's next sporting event is said to be the Tour Transalp, which he will contest together with his national team colleague Erich Winkler.

The seven-day stage race starts on Sunday, June 19th.
