Completely new in Starnberg traffic: the long traffic island on Münchner Strasse changes the way you turn off and onto Gautinger Strasse.

The changeover does not appear to be a major problem for motorists, but one has already cut across the island.

Most motorists have already gotten used to the new traffic routing at the Munich/Gautinger/Uhdestrasse intersection, but not all of them.

There will be construction again at the weekend – and again at the beginning of July.

Starnberg

– For decades, drivers were used to being able to turn off Gautinger Straße in both directions.

This has not been the case for a few days since the traffic island on the B 2 was completed.

Most have accepted this, but not all - traces show that at least one motorist has already cut across the island.

The state building authority in Weilheim is doing everything it can to prevent drivers who are unfamiliar with the area from making potentially dangerous turns.

So far, says site manager Oliver Schneider, the vast majority of drivers have had no problems with the "completely new traffic routing".

There are no complaints.

Schneider also attributes this to the closures in recent months, in which there was no free travel from Gautinger towards the Autobahn or onto Uhdestrasse.

The police have not reported any problems either.

The State Building Authority has already changed the signage so that all motorists can recognize the new regulation, including the signs ahead.

The authorities had new, additional signs specially made for the Gautinger/Petersbrunner/Leutstettener Straße intersection.

Goal: Everyone should be aware that you can no longer turn onto the B 2 from Gautinger Strasse in the direction of the Autobahn, but have to drive via Petersbrunner Strasse.

It was specially developed for this.

The fear is that motorists will turn off, but then end up in the two lanes towards the city center - as wrong-way drivers in oncoming traffic.

It may sound unbelievable, but it happened elsewhere last week during the construction phases.

The basic rule for crossing is "right in, right out".

Specifically, this means: Coming from the Autobahn, you can turn right onto Gautinger Strasse, but from Gautinger Strasse you can only turn right onto the B 2 (Münchner Strasse) towards the city centre.

Coming from the city center it is the same: turn right onto Uhdestraße, from Uhdestraße you can only turn right in the direction of the Autobahn.

All previous left-hand traffic will no longer apply, as the state building authority calls it.

So neither from the direction of the city on the Gautinger road nor from the direction of the motorway on the Uhdestraße – not very many did the latter anyway.

Depending on the destination, it looks like this:

■

Destination Gauting: from the city center via the B 2 to the district office, turn left onto Petersbrunner Straße, then continue in the direction of Gauting.

■

Destination Gauting: from the B 2 motorway turn right onto Petersbrunner Straße and continue in the direction of Gauting.

■

Motorway destination: Coming from Gauting, turn left at the Gautinger/Petersbrunner Straße intersection onto Petersbrunner Straße, continue on to the B 2, then turn left in the direction of the autobahn.

■

Destination city center: Coming from Gauting as usual.

The next section of the ceiling work will begin today on Münchner Straße (around 8 p.m.).

Traffic will be diverted in one lane past the construction site.

Perhaps the companies whose speed Schneider praises will already be finished on Saturday, otherwise it will be Sunday or Monday morning.

The work is not over yet.

From June 29 to July 11, the junction with Gautinger Strasse and one lane of the B 2 will be closed because a traffic island for pedestrian crossings is being built there.

It can't be earlier - the B 2 must be free for the G7 summit.
