2022-06-10T10:38:49.690Z

Almost 12 million students face the "gaokao" this year, 10.7% more than last year, after the increase in coronavirus cases in the country

One more year China remains silent for the

gaokao

.

The police cut off traffic, cars are prohibited from honking their horns, public works are stopped and you cannot raise your voice.

The country comes to a standstill for two days so as not to disturb its students, who risk their future in the toughest university entrance exam in the world.

Every June 7 and 8, millions of young people have a date that they have been preparing for since the beginning of their school life.

This year, 11.93 million adolescents appear for the 45th national university entrance exam;

10.67% more than the previous year, thus increasing the competition.

In the video that accompanies this news, Macarena Vidal, correspondent for EL PAÍS in China, explains how the country is facing the university entrance exam after the increase in COVID-19 infections.

The wave of coronavirus that affects China has also influenced the

gaokao

.

“Shanghai has been in lockdown until last week and Beijing has also been in semi-lockdown;

the children have been attending the online classes and the preparation has been a little different”, explains the correspondent.

In Beijing, each center has special rooms for students with symptoms in which the exam can be carried out.

In contrast, in Shanghai, the test has been delayed for a month and students are forced to stay in the city from June 4 and show five negative PCR test results.

Due to the high demand from students who want to achieve a good result, security measures also monitor candidates so that they cannot cheat.

Since 2016, copy in the

gaokao

it is a crime included in the Chinese Penal Code with punishments of up to seven years in prison.

The exam is the opportunity for families to have access to a higher standard of living.

Entering a prestigious university, such as the one in Beijing or Shanghai, will determine their well-being because "many of the candidates are only children and their future also depends on that of their parents and grandparents," explains Macarena Vidal.

In adolescence, young people are clear about the importance of getting a good grade.

"Now children of 14, 15 and 16 are hardly seen on the street because they spend their time studying," says the correspondent.

Test preparation is the key to success, and families spend a great deal of money on after-school classes to ensure it.

“What happens is that they have realized in China that this was promoting the difference of classes,

that the son of a businessman father in Beijing could have access to a better education and better chances of getting into a good university, while the son of a peasant in a remote area of China had it much worse”, indicates the correspondent.

For this reason, since last year the Chinese government has prohibited the teaching of subjects present in the curriculum of the

gaokao.
