What the State of Israel lacks is leadership Israel today

2022-06-10T08:24:15.688Z

We could not know then that the war would be the last of the wars in which the State of Israel set itself a strategic goal and met it, for at least 40 years; The last war in which Israel is the initiating party, which seeks to defeat the enemy

In early June 1982, when the First Lebanon War broke out, I was a young officer in an artillery battery on the northern border.

Very quickly, about a month after completing an officers' course, I found myself leading dozens of soldiers into Lebanon, in what was then called Operation Peace of the Galilee.

I spent a year and a half in the cedar cedar - from Iyun Valley to Ein Zahalta, from the hills above Beirut to Lake Crown.

I fired endless shells at the enemy, absorbed candy barrels of happiness from the Christians and the Druze.

I secured the peace talks between Israel and Lebanon, which led to the signing of a kind of "Abraham agreement" with us.

In the Shouf Mountains and on the outskirts of Beirut, we guarded ourselves from enemy bullets, and were unaware of the cruel attacks carried out by the Israeli left against the Begin-Sharon government.

We have vaguely heard about the betrayal of Uri Avnery and his partners, who allegedly went to interview Yasser Arafat and in fact strengthened the enemy.

What we knew well, in contrast to the plots circulated during and after the battle, was that the army knew in depth, long before the outbreak of hostilities, the broad objectives of the war.

I had plans for Operation Pines, which included the occupation of the Beirut-Damascus road line, and if every officer on the line, like me, was aware of the plans of the senior staff, there is no doubt that nothing was hidden from the prime minister either.

We all justified the risks we took on ourselves, both to the victims and the victims.

We understood that the Palestinian enemy, which had made Lebanon a base for attacks on the north, needed to be stopped.

We agreed that it was important to give a decisive blow to the Syrians, who ruled Lebanon and orchestrated the harassment.

What we could not know then, is that that war will be the last of the wars in which the State of Israel has set itself a strategic goal and met it, at least for 40 years;

The last war in which Israel is the initiating party, which seeks to defeat the enemy;

A war in which Israel behaved like any normal nation, whose leaders instruct the army to subdue or expel the enemy.

Do not signal, do not pass another round, do not send messages.

In Shalom Hagalil, Israel managed to deport Yasser Arafat, with all his staff and sisters-in-law, far to Tunis.

Until Rabin and Peres came and caused the Oslo disaster, which put the enemy's headquarters and army into it.

Although Sharon and Begin failed to change the face of the Middle East at the time, the Christians and the Druze did not deliver the promised goods and did not move the State of Lebanon by our side - but the ultimate goal of the war was fully achieved.

Since then, all the military moves of the State of Israel have resulted from dragging, mistakes and distress.

None of them, except to stop the terror in Operation Defensive Shield, achieved any goal.

From the Second Lebanon War, which was conducted with criminal irresponsibility, to all the operations on the outskirts of Gaza.

They are all crushed and absent from any purpose, except to achieve imaginary, short-term quiet.

They all express a policy of embarrassment and humility.

Not that the State of Israel lacks power, goals and vision, not that there is no one to achieve these.

What we are missing in those years is leadership.

Sovereignty instead of regulations

I wonder what would have happened if the Minister of Justice had proposed a resolution to apply Israeli sovereignty to the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. Opposition members claim the right-wing crown is a much-improved alternative to the Judea and Samaria regulations, which were not passed this week.

This move would land a blow on two poisoned birds: it also puts Netanyahu and his committee in an impossible situation, and also solves the sick evil we have been carrying with us since 1967. Because in those years a legal construction was built that discriminates against the Jews of Judea and Samaria, compared to other Israeli citizens. Which leaves excess and dangerous power in the hands of the Minister of Defense, the State Attorney's Office and the High Court.

And it is important to remember - the regulations in the eye of the storm do regulate the routine of life in Judea and Samaria, but it is a very bad routine.

True, if the Minister of Justice had pushed for the application of sovereignty in Judea and Samaria in the Knesset, the elements of the left and the center in the coalition would have exploded with rage, but what does it matter after the performance of RAAM, Meretz and Labor this week.

When even the populist-communist initiative for a minimum wage law that would wipe out the private economy was supported by coalition rioters from the left and Arab parties.

The experiment did fail, at least in the sense that the current coalition composition is unable to lead anything further.

As these lines are being written, the flagship hit hit is Nir Orbach, but it no longer really matters.

All elements of the coalition understand that they are deep in an election campaign, and therefore strive towards their voters.

It is surprising that it is precisely this impossible coalition that has achieved achievements that bypass the Likud governments on the right, certainly those of Netanyahu.

From the non-surrender to Hamas in the flag parade, through the prevention of the return of the American consulate to Jerusalem and the aggressive policy toward Iran, to the process of strengthening Jewish settlement in the Golan and Galilee and more.

But, since the fate of the coalition is doomed and it will officially collapse in the coming months, it is precisely the crisis of Judea and Samaria that has long plagued the right-wing elements in which a historic opportunity to reach achievements and launch an unprecedented election campaign. That the coalition, together with the opposition on the right, can lead unprecedented Bezeq legislation, which will amend everything the Likud did not do during the years of its rule. The planning and construction of the State of Israel on the Jewish localities and Area C, to remove the "transaction permit" that prevents Israelis from purchasing land in Judea and Samaria and endlessly. From promoting them.

For Bennett, Saar & Co., this will be the ultimate election campaign, proving how authentic the ideological-right is.

For the real right-wingers in the opposition, it will be a sweet-utopian dream.

Could Smutrich, Ben Gvir and Orit Struck vote against?

And what orders will Netanyahu land on his followers?

It is highly doubtful whether anyone has the courage required to lead such a dramatic move, but in the disturbing trap into which the political system finds itself, this is how the mildest and wisest scenario of all emerges.
