The Bennett-Lapid government, which is currently marking a year since its inception, has promised the public change and healing.

It may not be particularly noticeable - but significant achievements can actually be attributed to the Minister of Communications, Yoaz Handel, who is closing a second year in office, and a first year in the current government.

It seems that he is one of the ministers who promoted reforms that have been waiting for many years to move - and came to work.

In the last decade, no less than eight ministers have sat on the chair of the Minister of Communications, suffering from a reluctance to make decisions, while under Yoaz Handel the ministry has undergone rehabilitation after many years of stagnation.

In retrospect it can be said that his predecessors in office used the title mainly to serve Balfour Street, or to serve as government spokesmen in the TV studios.

A year for the Bennett government - a special project

In the last year, quite a few very significant achievements have been credited to Handel, ones that have been stuck for a long time, and will leave a mark for many years to come.

For example, until he took office the deployment of the fifth generation network was conducted lazily, alongside many theories of conspiracy theorists who attacked him for the decision and linked the deployment of the new frequency to the outbreak of the Corona virus.

At the same time, the Ministry of Communications announced that the 2nd generation (GSM) and 3rd generation cellular (UMTS) networks will be closed in a phased process that will last until the end of 2025. The aim of the move, which is also made in many countries around the world, is to clear frequencies for 5th generation.

After years: a significant shake-up to the Internet market

Telecommunications companies have refused for years to promote the deployment of fiber-optic (ultra-high-speed Internet) because of regulation in the field, which made the idea unprofitable and particularly complex. By removing the barriers, it shook the Internet market in Israel.

As part of the effort, last month the Ministry of Communications approved Bezeq to expand the fiber-optic Internet deployment areas to other localities in the periphery, which currently benefit only certain areas, especially in the center of the country. "Advanced infrastructure and high-speed Internet in the peripheral localities, in the ultra-Orthodox sector and in the Arab sector are critical to reducing the gaps, and integrating into Israeli society and the economy."

In fact, over the next year, about half of the population is expected to be connected to a fiber-optic network - which will put Israel at the top of the leading countries in ultra-high-speed Internet accessibility.

And that's not all, last April the Ministry of Communications put an end to the split between the infrastructure and the Internet market provider - a phenomenon that caused the media companies' customers unnecessary expenses and a headache.

The new reform will no longer allow split sales of Internet services to new subscribers.

The reform has meant that every consumer in Israel will have one address for purchasing Internet services and troubleshooting.

In the first phase, the change applies to Bezeq, and later will also apply to Hot.

Until now it was possible to purchase the service in a split way in the way that the consumer purchased an internet infrastructure service separately and an internet provider service separately.
