A Syrian army source said the attack was aimed at targeted sites in the area.

Also, according to previous announcements by the state media in the country, this time too it was reported that the Syrian air defense intercepted the missiles and shot down most of them.

Due to the damage caused to the place, the Syrian Ministry of Transportation announced yesterday the suspension of inbound and outbound flights at the airport.

According to the Syrian News Agency, the shutdown is due to several technical devices that have become obsolete.

"When the faults are rectified, a notice will be issued on the return of the flights," it was reported.

Satellite images released later show two runways at the airport being disabled.

Following the events, in Russia they accused Israel of assault and issued a strong and unusual condemnation against it.

"We are forced to emphasize once again that the ongoing Israeli shelling of Syrian territory, in violation of the basic norms of international law, is unacceptable," said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

"These irresponsible actions endanger international air traffic and put the lives of innocent people in real danger."

She added that Russia was demanding that Israel put an end to "this evil practice."

ISI's satellite images - ImageSat International, the satellite company and intelligence solutions, show the results of last night's attack at Damascus International Airport.

They can be seen as a complete shutdown of both runways - which led to the shutdown of the entire airport until their repair.
