Holzkirchen seems to be on the right track on the way to energy self-sufficiency: For the first time this Easter, more electricity was generated than was consumed in the electricity grid area of the municipal utilities.

Holzkirchen

– Holzkirchen seems to be on the right track on the way to energy self-sufficiency: As the Holzkirchen municipal utilities are now reporting, on Easter Sunday (April 17) they were able to detect a surplus of local electricity generation compared to electricity consumption in their grid area for the first time for a few hours this year.

In plain language, this means that more electricity was generated locally than was consumed.

According to Albert Götz, managing director of the municipal utilities, more locally generated electricity was available for a few hours during the day than was taken from the grid for the first time on Easter Sunday, so that the excess could be fed back into the superordinate grid of Bayernwerk Netz GmbH.

The electricity grid area of the municipal utilities includes Holzkirchen, Föching, Marschall and Roggersdorf.

Not only geothermal energy, but also private PV systems made a contribution

By far the largest share of this was supplied by the Holzkirchen geothermal power plant, which fed a peak electrical output of around 3.2 megawatts into the medium-voltage network (20kV) of the municipal utilities on Easter Sunday - in addition to the heat for the district heating network.

In contrast to the more than 500 photovoltaic systems (PV systems) that feed in mostly at low voltage level (400V), which are mainly installed on the roofs of single-family houses and some public buildings, the geothermal power plant is base load capable and independent of sun and wind.

However, the photovoltaic systems and some other smaller feed-in systems in the grid area were also instrumental in achieving the electricity surplus of April 17th, the municipal utilities report.

Local electricity mainly from renewable sources

The vast majority of electricity generators are systems that convert renewable energies into electricity.

The municipal utilities themselves also operate some PV systems that feed into the public power grid.

Another system with 99.94 kilowatts (peak) was recently installed on the roof of the workshop halls at the headquarters of the municipal works in Industriestraße.

Only a few feed-in systems in the grid area (particularly combined heat and power systems in the form of combined heat and power plants and a few fuel cell systems) also generate electricity from fossil fuels, but their share of the total feed-in is comparatively small, the municipal utilities explain.
