A dream comes true for the Bavarian Yacht Club: the Starnberg Sailing Club is building a new sports building for its members.

The laying of the foundation stone was on Friday.

Starnberg – For six years, the Bavarian Yacht Club has been dreaming of a new, modern building on its site that will be functional above all for its young sailors, and now it is becoming reality.

The project, now estimated at four million euros, called Seeseitn, is a glass house on stilts with a spacious wooden terrace directly on the lake within a larger open area with berths for modern boat classes and an optimized harbor basin with partially covered berths for the boats of the trainers and race officers.

In the building there are various rooms for further education and theory courses, celebrations and meetings for young and old.

Construction work on the Seeseitn project since the beginning of 2022

Construction work began at the beginning of this year with the demolition of the hangar and the filling of the water basin.

According to the BYC press release, nature conservation was of great importance both during the demolition and during the new construction, in order to avoid contamination of the lake and later to achieve a near-natural expansion of the shore.

After new sheet piling was installed, piles were driven into the ground up to 34 meters as the basis for the structure.

An expert opinion confirmed the sufficient strength so that the floor slab could be laid in May.

The long-awaited laying of the foundation stone took place on Friday, and the Seeseitn should be ready next year.

BYC Chairman Steiner: "Today is a real milestone"

"Today is a real milestone, a pointer to the future of the club," said Dr.

Michael Steiner, Chairman of the BYC, in his welcome speech.

With the completion of the project, the club can continue to expand the successful sailing and regatta sport and thus make the dreams of the youngsters come true.

"And today we are laying the foundation for this dream," said Steiner - under the motto: "Always a hand's breadth above the water." Background of the motto: In 2016 the club grounds were completely flooded due to the flood at the time.

Numerous members, friends and sponsors of the BYC as well as many prominent politicians such as MdB Michael Kießling, member of the state parliament Dr.

Ute Eiling-Hütig, Jörg Ammon, President of the Bavarian State Sports Association, Deputy District Administrator Matthias Vilsmayer or the 2nd Mayor of Starnberg, Angelika Kammerl.

Minister Herrmann is a star guest at the Seeseitn laying of the foundation stone

The star guest, however, was Minister of State Joachim Herrmann, who congratulated the BYC on the project in his capacity as Minister of Sport.

Above all, he emphasized the importance of youth work, which has been done at the Bavarian Yacht Club for over 130 years.

"I have great respect for sailing," said Herrmann.

Among other things, sailing also develops the ability to work in a team, “and that is very important for the youngsters”.

The new sports facility "creates ideal conditions for this".

And the state government would like to spend subsidies for this – for the BYC this is “the modest sum of 220,000 euros”.

Together with Dr.

Michael Steiner Herrmann lowered the foundation stone bomb into the already completed floor slab.

And so that posterity can remember this historic date, they placed the current Friday edition of Starnberger Merkur in the stainless steel container.

In the words of sailors, Interior Minister Herrmann wished “mast and sheet breakage – but not during construction” before the party moved to the terrace of the BYC Casino to toast together.
