Gmund – The Tegernseer Tal secondary school got through the corona pandemic with a lot of creativity, including lockdown and homeschooling.

There was an award for that.

March 16, 2020 was no ordinary start to a new school week at the Tegernseer Tal secondary school in Gmund.

The corona pandemic spread rapidly.

The result: lockdown – all schools remained closed.

Distance learning began for around 1.6 million students in Bavaria.

Corona turned school operations completely upside down.

Lessons had to be adapted to new circumstances within a short period of time.

This required creativity and inventiveness on the part of the teachers and headmasters.

The Ministry of Education has now awarded schools that have met this challenge in a particularly prudent and creative way - including the Realschule Tegernseer Tal.

Plan despite corona lockdowns

"I've been active in the parents' council of the secondary school for over ten years, so it was clear to me that the school would do everything it could to support the children and families in this crisis," says Rita Haimerl, chairwoman of the parents' council.

"The fact that it was clear from day one during the lockdown how the school would continue and that, above all, we were asked again and again what was good and where things weren't going so well, helped us families a lot during these unsettling times."

This is also confirmed by student representative Julia Schmid: "The switch to distance learning was a big challenge for us students, but the teachers made it easy for us: We knew from the start how we could work together in teams and where we could find information and material.

If we had any questions, we could always reach the teachers and the school administration quickly and easily via the chat.”

Regular surveys of students and parents

The school has now been awarded for its approach of placing the care of relationships at the center of its activities: A digital school building was built overnight at the time, in which all students not only access learning materials, but also work closely with them via chat and video able to keep in touch with teachers and each other.

It was important to the school to create contact points for students who were struggling with the situation.

In regular surveys of students and parents, satisfaction with the special situation was asked and targeted adjustments were made where necessary.

Joint effort in the corona pandemic

"During the pandemic-related school closures, the school's teachers managed with a joint effort to stay close to the children and families and to accompany them as best as possible through this difficult time," summarizes headmaster Tobias Schreiner.

"The fact that this achievement is now also being recognized in the form of this award makes us a little proud, of course, and at the same time it is also our duty to never stand still in the school's development, but to constantly face the challenges of the time."

The fact that the teachers at the Realschule in Gmund passed on their experiences and concepts in numerous further training courses regionally and throughout Bavaria also contributed to the award, so that other schools could also build on them.

Associated with this recognition is a cash prize of over 1,000 euros.

"What the money will be used for has not yet been decided," says the headmaster.

"It is clear that the school community as a whole should benefit in some way."
