Queen Elizabeth II: Jamaica initiates separation from the Crown

The British royal family's charm offensive has apparently not borne fruit.

Prince William (39) and Kate Middleton (40) also visited Jamaica during their heatedly discussed Caribbean tour in March.

Your next trip there will probably not be in the service of the crown.

As the "Express" reports, the Jamaican politician Marlene Malahoo Forte QC reported to Parliament in Kingston that the conversion to a republic should take place by the next elections in 2025.

"I am pleased to report to this honorable House that work to achieve this goal, although gradual, has officially begun," the newspaper quoted Malahoo Forte, which also believes other islands in the Caribbean may follow.

Jamaica's transition to becoming a republic requires change

In order for the process to succeed, a committee is to be set up to deal with constitutional reform.

A referendum on Jamaica's independence is also to be held at a later date.

In a conversation with the ducal couple of Cambridge, Prime Minister Andrew Holness (49) had already expressed Jamaica's desire for independence in the spring.

He is now putting his words into action.

New head of state will replace Queen Elizabeth in Jamaica

The former British colony gained independence in August 1962.

Since then, Jamaica has been a member of the Commonwealth, which comprises 54 states with around 2.5 billion inhabitants.

The British royal family has not yet commented on Jamaica's break.

Barbadians received congratulations from Queen Elizabeth in November 2021, and a similar letter could arrive in Kingston in a few years.

Prince Charles (73) attended the ceremony to found the Barbadian Republic as a guest of honour.
