2022-06-11T10:56:17.986Z

The presidency of Colombia will be defined in a second round on June 19 between Gustavo Petro and Rodolfo Hernández who, according to the first polls, remain in a technical tie

The presidency of Colombia will be defined on June 19 in a second round between Gustavo Petro, the leftist candidate who obtained 40% of the vote, and the populist billionaire Rodolfo Hernández, with 28%.

After the election day on Sunday, May 29, in which more than 21 million people participated and which passed in relative calm, the most relevant political figures in the country have gradually announced their support.

The right of the defeated Federico Gutiérrez turned to Rodolfo Hernández for "fear of Petro", while center leaders such as Alejandro Gaviria, Mábel Lara and Luis Gilberto Murillo, Sergio Fajardo's vice-presidential candidate, announced their support for Petro.

The polls place the two finalists in a technical tie.

Rodolfo Hernández asks, once again, respect for his disappeared daughter

The candidate shared a statement to the public in which he responds to those who "defame regarding the disappearance of my daughter and disrespectfully make fun of the pain I have left."

Juliana Hernández, her family has told, she has been missing since 2004 after being kidnapped by the ELN guerrilla.

This armed group, for her part, denied this week that it was the armed group responsible for her disappearance.

Later, it was learned through local media that her ID card, her state ID, is still active.

To this last, the Hernández family explained that, although they have already initiated legal actions to declare Juliana's death, a judge has not determined it.

That is why the card is still active.

"As long as the judicial authority does not declare it, my daughter's marital status will not change," the statement said.

“Reason for which her citizenship card continues to be active and the assets that belong to her continue to be registered in her name.”

As his wife did a few days ago, the candidate asked that they "respect the pain of others and do not take advantage of personal tragedies to try to discredit us with false news."

The Petro campaign files a complaint for interception of communications

Alfonso Prada, the head of debate for the presidential campaign of Gustavo Petro and Francia Márquez, has filed a formal complaint with the Prosecutor's Office for the leaking of a series of recordings in which members of the left-wing coalition team discuss strategies to discredit their political opponents.

The complaint for violation of privacy, secrecy and interception of communications argues that the disclosure of private conversations puts the security of both the campaign and Petro and his team at risk.

“The presidential campaign is the victim of a very serious act of hacking and illegal infiltrations where they illegally spied on us, recorded and leaked private conversations, facts that were published nationally on June 9, 2022 in the Semana Magazine in its digital platforms and then replicated in other media," says the complaint.

Although the source of the leaks is still unclear, Petro himself assured the day before that the magazine has hours of recordings made through the communications platform of Colombia Humana, his political movement, and requested that they be published in full, without editions or manipulations, so that each citizen can draw their own conclusions.

From other political shores they have questioned the methods of campaigning of the Historical Pact.

Rodolfo Hernández's team interrupts an interview in Miami

Presidential candidate Rodolfo Hernández's team has interrupted an interview with the Telemundo news network in Miami.

The 77-year-old former mayor of Bucaramanga is in Florida until next Saturday, and as part of his agenda he spoke with the journalist Rogelio Mora-Tagle.

At the end of the interview, when the journalist asks him about the judicial process for corruption that he faces in Colombia, the candidate's advisers abruptly interrupt the conversation.

"The candidate was always ready to respond, in fact he was responding when he was interrupted, at no time was he upset, nor was he rude to me," Mora-Tagle said of the incident, which was captured on camera.

Latest poll: Petro 48.1%, Rodolfo 46.8%

Gustavo Petro has surpassed Rodolfo Hernández for the third day since the finalists of the second round were known in the daily 'tracking' carried out by the firm GAD3 for the RCN Channel.

In the new poll, Hernández slightly discounts the advantage of the candidate of the Historical Pact.

Petro takes the lead, reaching 48.1% of the preferences, while Hernández falls slightly to 46.8%.

Although with such short distances it is considered a technical tie, the trend after the first round of May 29 has been a slow rise for the candidate of the Historical Pact and a slight decline –although a little more accelerated– for the former mayor of Bucaramanga, as other opinion polls have also captured.

Sergio Fajardo: “I am going to vote blank on June 19.

Again, like in 2018”

The former candidate of the political center, Sergio Fajardo, has announced his blank vote for the second presidential round, the same political decision he made in 2018 and for which he was harshly criticized for the last four years.

At that time it was believed that, as the third electoral political force, his support by Iván Duque or Gustavo Petro in the second round was decisive.

But he did not take a position, and said that he went on a trip to see whales.

In these elections, the political center is also coveted, since Hernández and Petro are in a technical tie according to the polls, and although Fajardo only obtained 4% of the vote, that small percentage could change the balance.

But Fajardo, once again, says that he cannot support any of them.

"Petro is a messianic and authoritarian leader," he writes about the leader of the left, whom he criticizes for accepting corrupt people in his campaign, for offering "impossible" programs, and for surrounding himself with militants who compete electorally with the "thugs."

But then he argues why he can't vote for Rodolfo Hernández either.

“He knows little about the country and his experience governing and in politics is limited”, he writes about the candidate who has grouped the votes of the right in this contest.

He also criticizes that Hernández closed the door to the coalition as a "lout and rude", wanting his support as a "blank check in his name" and not reaching agreements.

"The truth is that the details of his program are not clear,

Boric on the second round: "you know where our hearts are"

The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, visiting the US to attend the Summit of the Americas, has referred to the second round of the presidential elections in Colombia.

“You know where our hearts are”, he answered when the Colombian press asked him in Los Angeles about his preferences.

It was an undisguised nod to Gustavo Petro, the leftist leader with whom he has had numerous approaches.

“Beyond my personal preferences and political affinities that you know, we have a duty to have a state relationship.

We are going to respect the decision of the Colombian people”, clarified the president.

Boric's affinity with the Historical Pact candidate has been public, to the point that Petro attended the Chilean's inauguration on March 11, despite the fact that the event occurred on the eve of the legislative elections.

Back then, the two even took the photo making a heart shape with their hands that accompanies this entry.

This Tuesday, Petro explained his proposals in a talk with the director of EL PAÍS, Pepa Bueno, within the framework of the PRISA Thought Festival, in Cartagena.

In the conversation, they have asked him if a victory for him in Colombia and for Lula in Brazil would create a new axis together with Boric.

"Undoubtedly.

A Latin America that values knowledge, culture and agriculture”, he replied.

His rival in the second round on June 19, Rodolfo Hernández, declined the invitation to attend the festival.

The former mayor of Bucaramanga, 77, has refused to participate in any debate in the final stretch.

Petro has interspersed his numerous public square events in the long presidential campaign with an international agenda that has led him to also meet, in addition to Boric, with Pope Francis at the Holy See and in Madrid with Pedro Sánchez, the president of the Government of Spain.

Hernández, for his part, announced for this week an unusual visit to South Florida where he will meet with leaders of the Colombian community and businessmen.

Carlos Amaya leaves with Rodolfo Hernández

The former governor of Boyacá Carlos Amaya, who was a candidate for the dissolved Centro Esperanza Coalition, has “officially” announced this Tuesday that he will support Rodolfo Hernández in the second round of the presidential elections in which he faces Gustavo Petro.

The support of Amaya, from the progressive Alianza Verde party, reinforces the electoral strength that Hernández has shown in Boyacá, and in general in the eastern region of the country.

The former Governor was present at the meetings that Hernández held with Sergio Fajardo after the first round, and announces his vote despite the noisy slam of the door that the engineer gave over the weekend to a programmatic agreement with the former central candidate.

Antonio Navarro Wolff announces his support for Gustavo Petro and Francia Márquez

Less than two weeks before the presidential elections, the former president of the Constituent Assembly and co-president of the Alianza Verde party, Antonio Navarro Wolff, announced his support in the second round of elections for Gustavo Petro and Francia Márquez.

"Gustavo Petro has the intelligence and training to carry out the Change that Colombia needs," Navarro Wolff wrote on Twitter, where he explained the reasons for supporting the candidates of the Historic Pact.

“As spokesman co-president of the Green Alliance, he kept silent out of respect for the freedom of choice of alternative candidates that we gave to our members, who have already expressed their decision.

It's time to make mine public."

And he enumerated a list of ideas that he believes that an eventual presidency of Petro, Colombia will be able to achieve: “Zero corruption, reduce inequality,

Defeated the center, their leaders have had to decide between the two finalists.

Most of the people who surrounded Fajardo, such as his vice-presidential formula, Luis Gilberto Murillo, have already supported Petro.

So did the former Minister of Health Alejandro Gaviria.

But for Fajardo himself to do so seemed very difficult, since he has numerous disagreements with the left-wing candidate.
