Update from Thursday, June 9, 7.45 p.m .:

Vladimir Putin puts the Ukraine war on a level with the Great Northern War under Russia’s Tsar Peter I. On the 350th birthday of Peter the Great, he spoke of a “return of Russian soil”, like dpa reported.

With his conquests, the Russian tsar, Peter the Great, ensured that Russia gained access to the Baltic Sea.

At the time, however, he did not conquer the area around today's megacity of St. Petersburg from Sweden, but rather regained it, said Putin.

"Apparently it is also our lot: to bring them back and strengthen them," the president drew parallels to the war against Ukraine, according to the Interfax news agency on Thursday (June 9).

Ukraine-News: Civilians entrench themselves in Azot chemical plant in Sieverodonetsk

After heavy fighting, the Russian army controls most of Sievarodonetsk.

Only the industrial area is still in Ukrainian hands.

This was announced by the governor of the Luhansk region, Serhiy Hajday, in his Telegram channel on Wednesday.

The regional governor had previously described the defense of Sieverodonetsk as a "mission impossible".

"The Russians are shooting at everything, they are destroying all the houses in Sieverodonetsk, with tanks, with artillery," Hajday said.

Ukraine: Cyber war is like 'Rugby World Cup without jerseys'

So far, Russia has had far less success using digital warfare methods in Ukraine than many expected.

Cybersecurity experts expected devastating, large-scale cyberattacks on Ukraine, General Karol Molenda, head of Poland's National Cybersecurity Center, said Wednesday at an international trade fair in Lille, France.

But Ukraine was prepared and "withstood the attacks of Russia".

However, General Didier Tisseyre, head of the French cyber defense forces, underlined that the analysis of the cyber conflict is becoming more difficult.

Independent hacker groups have joined the fight, while companies like Microsoft and Elon Musk's Starlink are supporting Ukraine.

He likened the cyber war to a "Rugby World Cup where all the teams are on the field without their distinctive jerseys."

Ukraine war: Envoy Selenskyjs counts on EU candidate status

After talks in Berlin, Zelenskyy's special envoy for EU accession prospects expressed confidence that his country will receive candidate status for the European Union.

If the EU Commission makes a corresponding recommendation in the coming week, he assumes that the 27 member states will agree, said Regional Development Minister Oleksiy Tschernyschow, the dpa.

He also expects approval from Germany.

The federal government has so far been reluctant.
