The scene of the accident on Road 412 (Israel Police)

The driver of the vehicle suspected of trampling to death last night (Saturday) of police volunteer Amichai Carmeli was apparently driving under the influence of alcohol.

He was arrested along with four other Rahat residents on suspicion of involvement in the accident, all of whom will be brought to court later today for a request to extend their detention.

Carmeli was run over to death at a checkpoint for drunkenness on Maccabim Road in Rishon Lezion, near the Beit Dagan junction.

This, according to the suspicion, when the vehicle in which the five were traveling collided with a checkpoint and hit him and other volunteers who were at the scene and were lightly injured.

Police suspect that prior to the incident, the five were involved in another car accident in the city - during which they hit a taxi and fled.

"We are still investigating the circumstances of the incident but it appears that it was a serious incident that began with a hit-and-run accident, continued with disobedience to police officers and ended with an escape attempt and a police checkpoint that injured Amichai and injured two volunteers," said Police Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai.

Shabtai added that Amichai is an example and role model for contributing to the community, dedication and responsibility through meaningful service in the Police Traffic Division.

"Week after week, Amichai saved the lives of many thanks to the police activity and life-saving enforcement he carried out on the roads, and this morning he was killed when a vehicle trying to break through a police checkpoint hit him and his other friends."

said.

The head of the traffic department, Superintendent Yehuda Ben-Atar, said that this was a very serious incident and also paid tribute to Amichai.

"Major General Amichai Carmeli fell on guard in protecting road users," he stated.

He is professional, brave, the salt of the earth and I send my condolences to the family. "

Amichai, a 46-year-old resident of the city, left behind a wife, Keren, his two children - 19-year-old Yuval and 16-year-old Sagi, his father Yitzhak, and his two brothers Amit and Eran.

He served as a volunteer in the traffic department for more than 15 years and police said he used to volunteer in the complex shift of the night between Friday and Saturday and conduct drunk driving tests for drivers and keep the teens entertained.

His grandfather is Corporal Moshe Carmeli, a police officer who fell on the eve of Yom Kippur in 1973 when a grenade was thrown at him on the main street of Gaza.

"A serious incident."

Amichai's son, Sagi, paid tribute to his father.

"My father, how can I write down or talk to you in the past tense," he said.

"Only yesterday you were with me, with our mother Yuval and Joy. I do not know what to say or do or how to behave but I will still try - because you always told me that if I do not try I will not know. You always supported us and always showed us the good "I'm sitting in your old room and do not know what to do, people come to the house to comfort but I'm just waiting for the omelet, salad and laughs you make."

The suspects were apparently involved in another accident.

His sister-in-law Dana said that from the age of 16, Amichai volunteered for the Civil Guard, where he met his wife Keren.

"They've been together for 28 years," she said.

"Amichai was a man who loved life, loved to travel. He knew the land like the back of his hand. He knew every stone and corner. He plowed the whole country from Dan to Eilat. He loved animals."

She added that Amichai was a family man.

"14 years ago he lost his mother. From the day he volunteered in the Civil Guard it was clear he would stay all his life and they saw that he really liked it. He would do the hardest shifts - a lot on Friday nights because it was important for him to keep young people drinking and drunk. Amichai was a son "A person who does not care what needs to be done for you. It has always been in his blood to be for someone else."
