Vitamins and trace elements are not only good for the immune system, some also have an anti-inflammatory effect - for colds or even rheumatism and acne.

Bonn – Our diet and certain foods and their ingredients can help reduce or completely avoid inflammation in the body.

According to the Society for Nutritional Therapy and Prevention (FET) e.

V., it makes sense to give preference to certain anti-inflammatory foods and dishes - particularly relevant for people who suffer from chronic inflammation such as rheumatism, arthrosis, diabetes or acne.

Part of an anti-inflammatory diet are certain vitamins and trace elements.

Anti-inflammatory foods help with chronic inflammation and disease

In many cases, it has been proven which foods can either promote inflammation in the body or have an anti-inflammatory effect.

According to the FET, switching to a diet with anti-inflammatory foods can help with the following symptoms and conditions:

  • Stomach and intestines: Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulosis and diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, enteritis, gastritis

  • Liver, bile, pancreas: fatty liver, inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), gallstones

  • Skin: neurodermatitis, acne, psoriasis (psoriasis), chronic itching (pruritus)

  • Bones and Joints: Rheumatism, Rheumatic Arthritis

  • Respiratory: Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

  • Thyroid: Hashimoto's thyroiditis

  • Neuronal diseases: multiple sclerosis, cancer

  • Metabolic diseases: arteriosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, gout

Unhealthy fats, for example, can be a cause of so-called "silent" inflammation that promotes chronic diseases such as cancer.

Vitamins, especially vitamins C, E and the pro-vitamin beta-carotene, as well as trace elements such as selenium and zinc should be part of an anti-inflammatory diet.

Help with chronic inflammation: Take zinc

People who also take zinc preparations (preferably pure substances) at the onset of a cold are symptom-free earlier than patients who do not take zinc.

Zinc is proven to not only be good for our immune system - the strong trace element also has an anti-inflammatory effect and promotes wound healing of the skin, which can help people with acne in particular.

Zinc is a true all-rounder when it comes to positive effects in our body.

As the "Apotheken Umschau" picks up, the trace element can even shorten the duration of a cold: people who also take zinc preparations (preferably pure substances) at the beginning of a cold would be more symptom-free by the seventh day than patients who did not take zinc take.

Help with chronic inflammation: Take vitamin E

In addition to zinc, vitamin E also performs important tasks in the human body.

It has an antioxidant effect, activates cell protection, can reduce inflammatory reactions and prevent hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis).

According to the "Deutsche Apothekerzeitung", taking vitamin E even has a prophylactic effect against inflammation in rheumatism patients.

Studies have already shown a positive effect after taking 1000 IU of vitamin E daily for six to twelve weeks.

Antioxidant prophylaxis can be achieved with increased vitamin E doses of 50 to 200 IU instead of the basic requirement of 15 to 25 IU

Help with chronic inflammation: Take curcumin

Curcumin is the ingredient in the spice turmeric, also known as turmeric.

The plant can have an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect on digestive problems.

Studies indicate that the turmeric extract curcumin in higher doses can have a positive effect on the course and occurrence of flare-ups in ulcerative colitis, as the “Apotheken Umschau” summarizes.

As part of further scientific analyzes there were also indications that taking curcumin could reduce pain and joint stiffness in osteoarthritis.

However, people with a turmeric allergy or hypersensitivity should be careful with the increased intake of curcumin.
