A locomotive has collided tonight, around 9:50 p.m., with a Renfe regional train in Vila-seca, in the province of Tarragona, causing fifteen injuries of varying degrees, of which four have been taken to hospital.

The Civil Protection and emergency services are proceeding to evacuate the convoy, which came from Barcelona to Tortosa, in which fifty passengers were travelling.

The accident has occurred, according to Adif sources, after a breakdown in a brake of the Captrain locomotive at the Vila-seca halt, near the polygon.

The locomotive collided with a regional train that had left Barcelona's França station at 7:43 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Tortosa at 10:20 p.m.

The Medical Emergency System (SEM) reports that it has treated around twenty passengers, of which three have been transferred to the Santa Techa Hospital in Tarragona, all of them minor.

The Generalitat has applied the Ferrocat plan for railway accidents.

Firefighters have activated a dozen units and medical services.

After reviewing the convoys, they have estimated the number of passengers at 45.

Renfe has opened an investigation to find out the causes of the accident and has reported that rail traffic has been canceled on the section between Tarragona and Vila-seca and between Cambrils and Reus.

To guarantee the mobility of the affected passengers, on lines R15, R16 and R17, Renfe has managed an alternative road service from Móra d'Ebre, Tortosa and PortAventura, respectively.
