Car and truck drivers can expect border controls in Germany again in the coming weeks.
The reason is the G7 summit in Elmau.
Berlin/Munich – In less than two weeks, the most powerful politicians on earth will be cavorting in the idyllic Bavarian foothills of the Alps.
The G7 summit in Elmau is coming up.
From June 26th to 28th there will be a state of emergency in the region near Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The safety precautions are enormous.
The Federal Ministry of the Interior has now announced that there will be border controls in Germany again for the next three weeks.
G7 summit in Elmau: Border controls should sort out violent criminals from abroad
The Schengen Agreement actually eliminated all border controls in Europe.
But only recently were officials sent to the barriers to Germany again because of Corona.
The pandemic seems to have been banned for the time being, but there are already police officers at the borders of the Schengen area again.
This time it's about the G7 summit in Schloss Elmau.
The increased security requirements in the course of the summit would make such measures necessary, the Federal Ministry of the Interior said on Saturday.
It also said that border controls would be carried out between June 13 and July 3, depending on the situation.
They would be arranged flexibly in terms of time and location.
The controls are primarily intended to prevent the arrival of violent criminals from abroad.
It can already be assumed that there will be demonstrations and perhaps riots in the course of the politicians' meeting.

G7 summit in Elmau: Bavaria's interior minister supports the decision for border controls
Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) welcomed the temporary establishment of border controls.
"This decision was absolutely necessary," said Herrmann of the German Press Agency.
The Germany-wide internal border controls had already proven their worth at the G7 summit in 2015.
“Compared to back then, the global political situation has worsened again.
We have to do everything we can to get rioters and chaotic people out of circulation from the start," he said.

The Bavarian border police will support the federal police with the controls.
The smooth running of the summit has the highest priority.
Bavaria will do everything possible to protect the participants and guests of the summit as well as the local population.
