This is indeed a worrying abstention, not only in terms of its rate, but also its nature.
Since the establishment of the five-year term, we have seen a strong differential participation.
We like to say that the French want to give a majority to the elected president, but that is not quite what is happening.
As a general rule, the opposition electorate considers itself defeated and therefore finds it of little use to go and vote.
Abstention is therefore, for many, linked to the renunciation of a political camp: this marks more its fatalism than its distance vis-à-vis politics.

However, this year, we are not witnessing quite the same phenomenon.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon succeeded in reasonably mobilizing the left-wing electorate by giving them the feeling of a possible victory.
