Carmeli was run over to death at a checkpoint for drunkenness on Maccabim Road in Rishon Lezion, after being hit by a vehicle with five people in it, all apparently under the influence of alcohol.
At the funeral, the commissioner paid tribute to him, saying that he saw the incident as a "criminal attack on everything."

Police volunteer Amichai Carmeli was laid to rest this evening (Sunday) in the military cemetery in Rishon Lezion.
Carmeli was run over to death at a checkpoint for drunkenness on Maccabim Road in Rishon Lezion, near the Beit Dagan junction this weekend.
