(CNN Spanish) –

The Peruvian team lost on penalties in the playoff against Australia and was left out of the World Cup.

Australia got a place in Qatar 2022 after winning a heart-stopping playoff.

The game went to extra penalties after the goalless draw in the 90 minutes of regulation and extra time, in a match lacking goal plays.

This is how the penalties were:

Australia:

Martin Boyle ❌, Aaron Mooy ✅, Craig Goodwin ✅, Ajdin Hrustic ✅, Jamie Maclaren ✅, Awer Mabil ✅

Peru:

Gianluca Lapadula ✅, Alexander Callens ✅, Luis Advíncula ❌, Renato Tapia ✅, Edison Flores ✅, Alex Valera ❌

The red and white team, led by Ricardo Gareca, failed to repeat Russia 2018's qualifying via playoffs, as they did four years ago against New Zealand.

Australia will play the World Cup in Group D, with France, Denmark and Tunisia.

He repeats two of his rivals in 2018 having left out the third group opponent four years ago in the playoffs.

Australia reached the playoffs after winning the final match of the Asian qualifiers against the United Arab Emirates by a score of 2-1.

In the  intercontinental

playoff

match, the stakes were high: both Peru and Australia were looking to reach their sixth World Cup.

Peru is left without a World Cup.

It has qualified for five: it participated in the first World Cup, organized by Uruguay in 1930, then in Mexico in 1970, in Argentina in 1978 and in Spain in 1982. After the World Cup in Spain, Peru spent 36 years without participating in the competition.

The bad streak ended with their qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia after defeating New Zealand in the National State of Lima in the second leg of the playoff.
