A car accident involving cattle occurred in Sheung Shui.
At about 2 am, a motorist found that the Fanjin Highway was heading towards Sheung Shui, near Yingpanxia Village, and a cow was injured and lying on the road.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the cow had died of serious injuries.
The police inspected the cow and found some fragments of what is believed to be the headlight of the headlight on and around the cow. After preliminary investigation, it was suspected that the cow was hit by two cars, but neither of them stopped to report to the police.
Police officers searched for CCTV footage from a nearby garage to check whether there was any video recording of the incident so as to track the whereabouts of the vehicle involved.
FEHD staff arrived at the scene later and took away the cattle carcass.
According to the "Road Traffic Regulations", if there is an accident with a vehicle on the road, resulting in damage to any seven animals, including horses, cattle, donkeys, mules, sheep, pigs or goats, the driver of the vehicle must stop and report to the police, otherwise he will be called immediately. It is an offence and carries a maximum fine of $10,000 and imprisonment for 12 months.
In addition, under new regulations under the Road Traffic (Amendment) Ordinance 2021, drivers who hit a cat or dog must stop.
According to the Food and Health Bureau, the number of cats and dogs kept by the public has been increasing in recent years, and they have been injured or killed in traffic accidents from time to time.
In order to strengthen the protection of animal welfare, after the amendment takes effect, drivers must stop if they hit a cat or dog, so that the injured cat and dog can be treated in time.
