More and more Germans go on holiday with their dogs, and in many places holiday regions and hosts are adapting to the four-legged clientele.

Frankfurt/Main – At least one dog lives in more and more households in Germany.

And many families wish to spend their holidays together with their four-legged friend.

The topic of dog holidays is booming, more and more holiday regions in Europe are offering corresponding offers.

According to the Federal Association of Practicing Veterinarians e.

V. (bpt) it is important to prepare the holiday well.

Holidays with dogs: the most important tips

There are extensive considerations to be made before starting a holiday with a dog.

For a carefree dog holiday, the travel destination should be checked for its general dog-friendliness.

The checklist includes the following items:

  • What are the entry requirements for dogs in the holiday country?

  • Are special vaccinations or treatments required?

  • Are there certain restrictions on individual dog breeds, such as list dogs?

  • Are there dog-friendly accommodations in the desired area, i.e. holiday apartments, hotels or campsites?

  • Are there dog beaches at the dream travel destination, are there sights that can be visited with dogs, are dogs allowed in the restaurant?

  • What are the local health risks for the dog, such as Mediterranean diseases?

  • What are the travel options with a dog?

Holiday with your dog: flying

Air travel with a dog is basically possible, but most airlines only allow small dogs in the transport basket as hand luggage.

The regulations are different for the respective airlines.

Exceptions also apply to assistance dogs.

All other animals must be placed in the hold for the journey.

So-called flight boxes, which are available in different sizes, are common for safe transport.

Dogs that belong to the snub-nosed breeds, such as the pug, are not carried by many airlines at all or, if they are large enough, only carried as hand luggage.

Passengers must also observe the entry regulations of the respective destination country if they want to take their dog on holiday on the plane.

Holiday with your dog: On the train

Holidaying with a dog is relatively uncomplicated if the journey is started by long-distance train.

Traveling by train with a dog is possible in most European countries.

Small dogs travel with most railway companies in their own transport basket and are often free of charge, a small fee may apply.

Assistance dogs usually travel free of charge.

A ticket usually has to be purchased for larger dogs;

the animal must be kept on a leash.

In some countries, fur noses have to wear a muzzle on long-distance trains.

Some train companies also limit the number of dogs that can travel with each passenger.

Holiday with your dog: Own car

The most convenient way for your four-legged friend is to travel to the holiday destination in your own car.

The dog is familiar with this, it does not get stressed about unusual noises and smells or strangers.

The dog owner can take sufficient breaks and adjust the travel time individually to the needs of the dog - so the holiday with dog starts with the first kilometer driven.

The same applies in your own car or mobile home: the dog must be adequately secured.

This can be done with appropriate dog boxes, harnesses or separating grids.

Holiday with your dog: equipment

Most dog vacationers have more accessories on board for the dog than for the two-legged fellow travelers.

This is what you need to take with you on holiday with your dog:

  • European pet passport with up-to-date vaccinations and veterinary treatments required for entry into the destination country

  • Copy of the dog liability insurance

  • Protection against ticks, sandflies and Mediterranean diseases, depending on the destination

  • Dog travel pharmacy

  • Dog's favorite food and treats

  • Bowls for water and food

  • Collar, harness, leash(es) and Tasso brand, muzzle

  • poop bag

  • Dog bed or dog blankets

  • Care utensils such as a brush or toothbrush, additional towels

  • Addresses and phone numbers of local veterinarians

Good to know: Some dog-friendly holiday accommodations offer a dog welcome pack or provide dog beds.

Dog food and standard accessories can usually be bought in local pet shops, and even raw feeding (BARF) is no longer a rarity.
