High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, announced today that she will not seek a second term at the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The news agency AFP quoted Bachelet, a former president of Chile, as saying before the Human Rights Council: that her mandate as High Commissioner will be the last, pointing at the same time to her continued pursuit of dialogue.

She addressed the Council, saying: Be ready to listen to each other to understand mutual points of view and to work enthusiastically to find common ground.

Bachelet did not explain the reason for her decision, but observers point out that she has been subjected to severe criticism in recent months, especially from the United States.

It should be noted that Bachelet criticizes in many reports the violations of human rights by the Israeli occupation, and she warned in one of her reports in the last month of last year that the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories has reached catastrophic levels as a result of the continuous violations of the Israeli occupation and its settlers against the Palestinians.
