After the local elections in Saxony, the AfD admitted weaknesses.

"We did not achieve our goal of appointing a district administrator in the first round," said AfD party leader Jörg Urban on Monday in Dresden.

It won't be easy in the second round either "to get ahead".

Urban called the performance of the AfD candidate Maximilian Krah in the mayoral election in Dresden disappointing.

Dresden - Krah only achieved fourth place in the first ballot on Sunday with 14.4 percent.

Urban attributed this to the low profile of the applicant in the Dresden population.

With the exception of the left, the other parties were largely satisfied with their performance.

CDU General Secretary Alexander Dierks saw the constructive forces in the country strengthened.

Populism had been clearly rejected, he said with a view to the AfD.

"Enemies of the constitution do not set the tone in Saxony," said Green party leader Marie Müser.

SPD party leader Henning Homann considered the "downward trend of the AfD" to be confirmed by the local elections.
