The 9-euro ticket threatens chaos at the train stations around the Corpus Christi holiday.

To prevent this, passengers should pay attention to a few things.

Cologne – First Pentecost and now Corpus Christi: The long public holiday weekends in NRW in June not only ensure full motorways, but also full trains.

The 9-euro ticket makes traveling by bus and train cheaper and more attractive than ever for many people.

The transport associations in the state are even talking about a real "9-euro ticket boom in North Rhine-Westphalia".

The disadvantage: the high number of passengers pushes stations, trains and staff to their limits, reports 24RHEIN.

9-euro ticket on Corpus Christi: "We will not be able to prevent overloaded train stations"

The Rhein-Ruhr transport association (VRR), the Westphalia-Lippe local transport (NWL) and the Rhineland local transport (NVR) are preparing at full speed for the upcoming long weekend around Corpus Christi (June 16).

But one thing is also clear: "In all likelihood, we will not be able to prevent train stations that are overloaded for a short time like at Whitsun," says Heiko Sedlaczek, Managing Director of the NVR.

In addition, many railway construction sites in NRW are causing problems.

The routes between the Rhineland and the Ruhr area are of particular concern.

It will “probably get full again there,” says VRR board spokesman Ronald Lünser.

In order to prevent greater chaos at the stations and on the trains, the transport associations are appealing to passengers in advance.

9-Euro-Ticket: What you should consider on Corpus Christi

  • Use the S-Bahn more often for city tours.

These were recently significantly emptier than the regional trains

  • For reasons of space, avoid taking bicycles with you if possible.

The transport associations recommend the use of rental bicycles at the destinations

  • When boarding on full platforms, use the entire train and do not stand at the doors

Especially on city tours in the Rhineland and Ruhr area, travelers should also use the S-Bahn more often.

"We still have significantly more free capacity there than in the regional trains and in the RRX," emphasizes Lünser.

Another important point: Passengers should not take their own bicycles with them.

These would significantly increase the space problem in the already full trains, especially on the weekend of Corpus Christi.

Instead, travelers should use the rental bikes on site.

A major problem at Pentecost should not be repeated.

Many trains were late there, sometimes significantly, because the trains could not depart due to overcrowding in the door areas.

VRR, NWL and NVR therefore ask passengers “to use the entire length of a train for boarding on full platforms and not to stand in the area of the doors”.

9-euro ticket: More staff at train stations for Corpus Christi

In addition to the appeal to the passengers, the transport associations also act themselves. Above all, the staff at the heavily used train stations should be significantly increased for the Corpus Christi weekend.

"Over Corpus Christi, we and the transport companies will put everything that is possible on the rails and platforms," emphasizes Heiko Sedlaczek.

9-euro ticket in NRW: the most popular travel destinations

According to the transport associations, the 9-euro ticket in NRW is mainly used for weekend trips.

Particularly popular destinations are city trips to Düsseldorf and Cologne and the Ruhr area, but also trips to the Eifel, Sauerland or Münsterland.

So far, it has also been full at the transfer stations that are important for trips outside of NRW, such as Münster and Hamm.

"There the capacity utilization at Pentecost was many times higher than on normal weekend days," the transport associations explain.

At the main train stations in Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Essen, Dortmund and Hagen, additional so-called passenger guides are to be used.

These are designed to help passengers get on and off.

"We want to use this to help passengers who have previously had little contact with local public transport to get on and off quickly," explains Stephan Boleslawsky, Head of the Western Region at DB Station&Service.
