Before the knife attack at a university in Hamm, the suspect tried to buy a knife in a gun shop.
The seller had a strange feeling and refused the purchase, said a spokesman for the Dortmund public prosecutor of the German Press Agency on Tuesday.
Shortly after the failed attempt, the 34-year-old is said to have bought two kitchen knives in a shop in downtown Hammer.
Hamm - The "Westfälische Anzeiger" (online) previously reported about it.
In the attack last Friday, a lecturer was fatally stabbed.
The 30-year-old died in hospital on Saturday.
Three students aged 22 were injured.
The alleged perpetrator had been admitted to a psychiatric clinic.
After an expert report, the investigators assume that the 34-year-old was innocent or less responsible in the act.
Only two days earlier he had attempted suicide and had therefore been treated in a psychiatric clinic.
The police spoke of an "amoktat".
An ecumenical funeral service is to take place in the Pauluskirche in Hamm on Wednesday evening.
