An incident on the way to Mallorca forces the plane to land.

The machine of the Maltese airline Corendon has to turn because of "Code 7700".

Nuremberg/Basel – Flight Corendon Flight XR2271 had to land unscheduled in Switzerland.

Before that, the aircraft of the Maltese airline started a rather unusual turning manoeuvre.

The machine took off from Nuremberg Airport on Sunday morning and was supposed to land on the holiday island of Mallorca.

After Lausanne over Lake Geneva, the plane made a curve and turned around.

Then it was back to Germany.

The flight route then looks like a U-Hakerl over Mulhouse.

The machine takes course towards Basel Airport (Switzerland).

This is what a Twitter user @porusky noticed.

Flight XR2271 would probably fly towards Basel at an altitude of 2,780 meters, he writes.

The reason for this is the code 7700.

There are different emergency codes in aviation.

This is important to inform air traffic control and the authorities immediately and clearly.

The "Code 7700" (Seven seven - going to heaven) stands for an air emergency.

An emergency situation is not clearly defined.

It is an airborne emergency where danger is imminent.

These include medical emergencies on board, lack of fuel and a technical defect.

If a 7700 aircraft sends it, it will be immediately supported from the ground and given priority over other aircraft.

It is initially unclear why Corendon flight XR2271 turned around after transmitting code 7700.

However, the machine landed safely at Basel Airport (BSL) at 8.40 a.m., as can be seen from the data from

.

The aircraft is a Boeing 737-85R.

There is initially no information about the number of passengers and crew members on board the flight to Mallorca.

An Austrian Airlines (AUA) aircraft had to turn back unscheduled at the end of April.

162 passengers were on board.

Shortly after take-off, while still climbing, a left engine failed.

Then the pilots radioed "Mayday".
