Pope Francis warned in a meeting a few days ago with the media that the war in Ukraine heralds the start of World War III.
"A few years ago it occurred to me to say that we are experiencing World War III in sections," he noted, "for me today a third world war has already been declared."
Francis expressed his concern about the continuation of the war in Ukraine, and rejected the criticism leveled against him by those who claim that he did not strongly condemn the Kremlin.
"It is simplistic to say this, I am simply against reducing the complexity between good and evil without thinking about the roots and interests that are very complex," he added.
At the same time, the pope revealed that before embarking on the widest military maneuver on European soil since World War II on February 24 last year he met with an unnamed head of state who warned of what was to come.
"They do not understand that the Russians are imperialists and will not allow any foreign power to approach its territory," the pope explained, quoting what he was told at that meeting.

Meanwhile, the war, which has been going on for 110 days, continues to concentrate in the Donbas region in the east, where the Russians are now targeting the attacks on the city of Sverdnočka.
According to reports, they already control about 80 percent of the area.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zlansky today (Tuesday) referred to his army's supply situation and clarified that "we have enough weapons, but we lack the means to reduce Russia's advantage in long-range firing."
