Russian troops are about to conquer the Donbass.

Yet a former US general firmly believes in a military victory for Ukraine.

How he justifies it.

Munich/Kyiv/Washington – At least 32,500 Russian soldiers are said to have been killed or wounded after the invasion of Ukraine.

This was reported by the media project The Kyiv Independent

on June 14,

citing the Ukrainian General Staff.

Add to that 1,434 Russian tanks destroyed or captured, more than 3,500 wheeled armored vehicles disabled and 179 helicopters shot down.

Ukraine War: Russian troops advance in Donbass

This information cannot be verified independently, but former US General Ben Hodges firmly believes that Ukraine will win the war against Moscow ruler Vladimir Putin and his troops.

And in the course of this year.

And this despite the fact that the Ukrainian army is currently having to withdraw from the Donbass, in some cases suffering heavy losses.

"The Ukrainians," Hodges tells

Stern

, "can take the offensive and push the Russians back behind the February 23 lines."

For context: On February 24, the Russian invasion of the western neighboring country began.

It is crucial, Hodges explains in an interview with the news magazine, that Ukraine quickly gets the promised support from the West.

The main focus is on the promised rocket launchers, howitzers and other artillery shells.

Hodges was commander in chief of US troops in Europe until 2017.

He considers the Russian army to be "close to the end".

The 64-year-old ex-military justifies his thesis with an observation: The Russians and the pro-Russian separatists fired more than half of their precision projectiles, he explains to

, and the Kremlin cannot replace these weapons in the medium and long term because of Western sanctions .

Hodges also criticizes the West's attitude towards Russia.

"We're too scared," he says, adding: "We need bolder leadership.

The Russian army must be defeated.

Putin must appear defeated.

Only then will we be in a position of strength.”

The American is not the only expert who believes that the Russia-Ukraine war will soon turn around.

The much-cited Austrian military expert Gustav Gressel from the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) also expects a major Ukrainian offensive.

“We will see around mid-summer that Ukraine has significantly more soldiers as a result of the mobilization.

Ukraine's major counter-offensive could start in August, maybe even sooner in September," Gressel is quoted as saying by

Despite the defeats in Donbass, there are also optimistic tones from Kyiv.

If the Ukrainian army receives appropriate weapons, it can "liberate the territory," President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his daily video address on Monday evening (June 13).

This affects not only the eastern Ukrainian city of Sievjerodonetsk, but also "Mariupol and Crimea.

We simply need enough weapons to ensure all this," said the Ukrainian head of state: "Our partners have them." One of his closest advisors also predicts a turnaround through the heavy weapons from the West.

"We need long-range artillery, multiple rocket launchers, tanks, armored personnel carriers and drones," says Oleksiy Arestovych of the

Bild newspaper

(behind a paywall): "If we have enough, we will win the war.

When the West gave us 120 units of long-range artillery, the situation on the front changed immediately.

In three days the Russians lost the speed of their offensives.”

Among other things, Germany had pledged seven Panzerhaubitz 2000 from German industry stocks, four MARS II rocket launchers from the Bundeswehr and 15 decommissioned Gepard tanks .
