In the corona pandemic, nursing staff are reaching their limits.

The shortage of skilled workers is a big issue.

There is also a shortage of workers in other areas.

Munich/Nuremberg - The shortage of skilled workers in Germany has been an issue for years.

But at the latest in the Corona pandemic * it has become clear that there is a glaring lack of trained staff, especially in the nursing professions.

Projects such as the much-discussed vaccination requirement for medical staff could only exacerbate this further.

Added to this is demographic change.

Society is getting older, many qualified workers are retiring and fewer and fewer workers are paying into the pension fund.

Pension: immigration of skilled workers to help with financing

The shortage of skilled workers also points to another important issue - pensions*.

A reform is needed, but the traffic light coalition is reluctant.

According to the coalition agreement, the SPD, Greens and FDP would like to counteract the pension problem with “employment-related and qualified immigration” among other things.

It is high time for this, as the figures from 2020 already show.

In Germany, there is an enormous lack of qualified workers in a wide variety of areas.

The table below illustrates the ratio of skilled workers registered as unemployed to registered non-temporary jobs subject to social security contributions.

Shortage of skilled workers in Germany: three areas particularly affected

The situation in geriatric care is particularly precarious.

According to the Federal Employment Agency, there were just 33 unemployed skilled workers for every 100 advertised positions in 2020.

The second place on the lack podium was taken by the vehicle drivers in rail traffic.

Overall, fewer skilled workers are needed here than, for example, in geriatric care, but if you look at the unemployment-to-job ratio, it also looks meager here.

There were just 54 unemployed for every 100 jobs.

The third place was then taken by the nurses, rescue workers and midwives.

Here there were 61 unemployed for every 100 jobs.

With this data, however, it is still important to mention that only about every second vacancy is reported to the Federal Employment Agency.

And even with the unemployed, graduates or people who return to the labor market from hidden reserves are not included.
