Towards the supply of natural gas to Europe: Minister Elharar goes on coordination talks in Cairo Israel today

The visit, as part of the Regional Gas Forum of the Eastern Mediterranean Countries, is supposed to promote the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Israel and Egypt and the European Union.


The Minister of Energy, Karin Elharar, the director general of the ministry, Lior Shilat, and professionals from the ministry left


for Cairo today (Tuesday), where they will participate in the ministerial meeting of the Regional Gas Forum of the Eastern Mediterranean Countries (EMGF).

During the visit, the Minister and her staff will meet with the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources, Tarek al-Mula, and the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson.

This, in preparation for the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding - for the export of natural gas from Israel and Egypt to the EU countries.

In addition, the delegation will hold professional meetings in which, among other things, a periodic review of the forum's activities will be presented, and Phase B of the forum's long-term strategic plan will be presented, while setting anchors for its activities in the coming year.

The minister is also expected to visit during his stay in Egypt the palace of the president, 'Abd al-Fatah al-Sisi.

The Eastern Mediterranean Natural Gas Forum EMGF was established in January 2019, by Israel, Egypt, Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority.

This, with the aim of promoting regional cooperation between governments and organizations in the fields of production, consumption and supply of natural gas.

In 2021 the forum became an international organization and was joined by France as a member and the United States, the European Union and the World Bank as observers.

The organization is a platform for regional discourse of bodies and working groups regarding the utilization of natural gas resources in the area, formulating a common vision for realizing the regional potential, examining ways to utilize existing infrastructure and developing new infrastructure and more.

The forum includes a number of governmental, commercial and economic bodies, as well as working groups that promote common professional issues, including measures to promote the Eastern Mediterranean region as friendly for LNG-powered ships, as well as to examine tools for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in natural gas production and use.
