A sinkhole in the middle of the road that connects Guatemala City with other regions of the country has caused the closure of the route to the Pacific, for which both individuals and carriers must take alternate routes, the General Directorate reported on Tuesday Protection and Road Safety on his Twitter account.

The damage to the road, at kilometer 15 of the route to the Pacific, occurred this Tuesday morning, when a deep hole and cracks were opened in the rails.

In a statement, the government reported that "currently COVIAL (the Executing Unit for Road Conservation) is carrying out sounding studies with georadar and deflectometer, at the same time that CONRED (the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction) will issue its technical opinion."
It was reported that they will have to wait for the results of these studies to proceed with repairs to the affected area.
