In order to deepen students' understanding of different areas of Hong Kong's history and enrich their learning experience, St. Anthony's College and Catholic Pui Shing Secondary School, also from the Catholic Diocese, continue to participate in the ongoing participation of the Hong Kong Museum of History and Hong Kong

In order to deepen students’ understanding of Hong Kong’s history in different fields and enrich their learning experience, St. Anthony’s College and Catholic Pui Shing Secondary School, both from the Catholic Diocese, have continued to participate in the “Inter-School Inter-School” organized by the Hong Kong Museum of History and the Hong Kong Centre for the Promotion of Chinese Culture. Hong Kong History and Culture Project Study Competition” (Learning Competition).

The study competition has entered its 11th year. It has been providing a stage for various student historians, and has been judged by senior scholars and experts in the field of history.

In recent years, the two schools have won many awards in the study competition. In the 10th competition, they won the champion of the "Junior Division (Multimedia Production)", the first runner-up of the "Junior Division (Multimedia Production)" and the first runner-up of the "Advanced Division (Multimedia Production)" respectively. ”, it can be seen that both schools actively support students to conduct in-depth investigations and continue to train historical research talents.

[St. Anthony's College] Happy Learning "History"

St. Antoine's College for Girls has won the championship in the Junior Category (Multimedia Production) of the 9th and 10th Inter-School Hong Kong History and Culture Project Competition.

Think back to why we entered the History Project Competition in the first place?

Although participating in competitions usually have a heart to win, students often do not dare to try because they are afraid of losing.

Therefore, our original intention of signing up was simply to take students to "play", to broaden their knowledge, and to happily learn history independently.

And our goal is to complete the project study happily and without stress.

In the face of the epidemic for two years, students were forced to stay at home for a lot of time, and many overseas study tours were cancelled.

The theme of the tenth study is "Religious Beliefs and the Historical Development of Hong Kong".

Therefore, we considered that when choosing a topic, it would be better to choose a religion of ethnic minorities, to learn about Hong Kong's multiculturalism, and to add fun to the study.

Our title is "Brightening Hong Kong: An Exploration of Zoroastrianism's Development and Contribution to Hong Kong".

Zoroastrianism, also known as Zoroastrianism or Zoroastrianism.

Although the Bass people have been rooted in Hong Kong for more than a hundred years, most Hong Kong people are still unfamiliar with this religion.

It is also a very mysterious religion for students, prompting their curiosity to explore.

When the port of Hong Kong was opened, the Bass people had a pivotal influence on the development and contribution of early Hong Kong.

The students visited the Zoroastrian priest Ervad Homyar G Nasirabadwala, the chairman and wife of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Zoroastrian Charity Foundation Mr Neville Shroff and Mrs Farida N Shroff.

Students need to communicate in English throughout the whole process and ask questions timidly. However, when the interview is successfully completed, the students' self-confidence and a sense of satisfaction are unknowingly improved.

Through character interviews, students have the opportunity to meet different races and learn about different social classes.

Although it is "playing", it actually leaves a very deep learning experience for students.

Another way to study history is through field trips.

The footsteps of the Bass people to the development and contribution of Hong Kong are all over Hong Kong and Kowloon.

Before the field trip, students are like traveling. Students need to plan their own itinerary and collect second-hand information in advance, such as reading historical documents, borrowing related books, etc., which is a good opportunity for self-study.

Through the project study, students can understand the ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, and then respect different religions, and deepen their understanding of the history and culture of Hong Kong's integration of Chinese and Western cultures, which are closely related to our lives.

Cultivate a sense of historical mission

As for the theme of the ninth session, "Collective Memory - Hong Kong's Post-War Pop Culture", our topic is "Mark of the Times - Hong Kong Comic "Old Master". The reason for choosing the old master as the subject of study is that students love it the most. The manga is a work that resonates with the old, middle and young generations.

We met Mr. Wu Zhongxing, the publisher of "Old Master" during the Christmas holiday.

During the interview, I happened to meet the author Wang Ze and the editor-in-chief Qiu Xiutang, who were returning to Hong Kong from Taiwan to visit Mr. Wu Zhongxing.

We were fortunate enough to interview the author and publisher of Lao Master Zi to obtain first-hand historical material.

According to the interview, the authors and printers of "Old Master" have been passed down from the father's generation to the children's second generation. It can be seen that a long day across the ages, both the creators and the readers are passed down from generation to generation, so that students understand to the importance of historical and cultural heritage.

Mr. Wu Zhongxing was one of the important publishers in Hong Kong's cultural circles. It is a pity that he passed away due to illness a few months after the interview. This interview should be his last interview.

Even in the face of the epidemic, the students were unable to go back to school to make short films face-to-face, which made the production much more difficult, but everyone unexpectedly felt a sense of historical mission and wanted to turn this precious interview clip into a valuable historical documentary .

The learning process is basically student-led. From the beginning of the formulation of topics, the collection of second-hand information, character interviews to the post-production of short films, the students cooperate with each other and the teacher only plays a supporting role.

Interest is the strongest driving force for students to do it spontaneously.

Although the Inter-school Project Study on Hong Kong History and Culture is a competition, students are expected to have fun and learn.

[Catholic Pui Sheng Middle School] "Cultivating" "Saint" Persons: Investigating First-hand Historical Materials on the Field to Cultivate Diverse Historical Skills

"Pursue excellence, stop at perfection" is the connotation of the school motto of Catholic Pui Sheng Middle School, and it is also its goal of nurturing students' development.

The History Department of our school not only focuses on the transfer of historical knowledge, but also on how students can acquire diverse historical skills through case studies, cultivate students' spirit of inquiry, and view past and present issues from a macro perspective.

Therefore, Pui Shing Catholic Secondary School has been participating in the study competition since the first session, and won the championship of the "Multimedia Production Category (Advanced Category)" in one fell swoop. So far, it has won many awards, including the first, second and third runner-up, with a total of eight awards. Inspiring and becoming a focal project for the school's history department.

Different from the previous emphasis on imparting historical material content, history education now emphasizes the process of inquiry and the construction of knowledge for students to achieve "learning to learn". Therefore, the history department of our school focuses on cultivating students' historical inquiry ability, especially the ability to ask questions and find information. .

In the 2020-2021 academic year, the undergraduate department has been adhering to the tradition of many years, sending students from the junior high school group and senior high school group to participate in the "10th Inter-school Hong Kong History and Culture Project Study Competition" with the theme of "Religious Belief and Hong Kong Historical Development", and obtained the multimedia production junior high school respectively. Group and high school group double runner-up.

Reviewing the development track of the main church and echoing the Catholic school-running philosophy

Our school is a Catholic school run by the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong. It has always been adhering to the Catholic education philosophy and attaches great importance to the religious atmosphere.

Every year, the school prepares and arranges different types of religious activities to give students more opportunities to visit the church, such as arranging students to visit the nearby schools at Tin Shui Wai St. Yelino’s Church, Kowloon St. Teresa’s Church and Shek Kip Mei St. Francis Xavier Each church participates in religious activities so that students can understand the relationship between the church and religious life.

Students go to the cathedral for historical investigation

In addition, the church is inseparable from the urban development of Hong Kong, and it is also the collective memory of all Catholic believers. Therefore, the students of the junior high school group took "the development of the Catholic Church in Hong Kong" as their study direction, and chose "May you be praised— - Catholic Church Architecture and Urban Development in Hong Kong", and the study object is the famous Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Hong Kong Island.

Students searched second-hand documents, such as the introduction of various Catholic buildings, clips of different churches and Internet information, etc., and obtained first-hand information through interviews with priests and docents, focusing on local unique Catholic church buildings and beliefs Communication and development to enrich the content of the participating films.

Therefore, based on historical skills, students can further deepen their understanding of the work of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong by reviewing the historical development of the cathedral and understanding the interaction with the community.

Hong Kong is a place where Eastern and Western cultures meet. In addition to the strong Western culture brought by the colonial background, Chinese culture has also been passed down for a long time.

There are different traditional folk beliefs in the Chinese society, especially Taoism culture is prevalent, so the senior students in the high school group took "the development of Chinese society folk beliefs in Hong Kong" as the research direction, and chose to "view the development and current situation of Fuja in Hong Kong from Jinlan" as the research direction. The subject of the study is the "Jin Lan Guan", a folk Taoist organization and a registered charity organization.

Students searched second-hand documents, such as the relationship between Chinese Taoist culture and Lao Tzu, and the history of the introduction of Hong Kong from Chaozhou to the south. develop.

It can be seen that this study experience can inspire students to ask meaningful questions about what happened in the past, collect and analyze historical data, and then draw conclusions based on historical facts.

Participating students can effectively improve their history study skills during the competition, and greatly deepen their understanding of different subjects such as "History, Culture and Inheritance of the Early Hong Kong Region" and "Hong Kong's Growth and Development until the end of the 19th Century". It also contributes to the school-based history curriculum with research works, becoming one of the characteristic learning and teaching resources, further expanding students' successful experience and catering for the diversity of students' learning.

Pursue excellence

The History Department of Catholic Pui Shing Secondary School participated in the 11th International Project Study Competition on Hong Kong History and Culture with the theme of "War and Peace" this school year. "value, continue to train students in diverse historical skills, and educate students to respect life, cherish the concept of peace, and continue the vision and mission of Catholic education.
