Drinking water from air and sun: How a start-up wants to supply North Africa with drinking water

Millions of people in North Africa lack access to clean water. »Kumulus« aims to change that. The machine uses a natural phenomenon.

Water is scarce here: in Tunisia and Morocco, one in five people has no access to safely treated drinking water.

In Algeria it is one in three.

A Franco-Tunisian startup aims to bring clean water to schools and communities in Africa's arid regions.

This generator is called Kumulus.

The aim is to produce drinkable water from solar energy and air.

The concept is to recreate the phenomenon of morning dew.

So what happens?

We see that the air comes from here and goes through the first air filter to clean it of pollutants, then it goes into the machine to cool the water so we recreate the dew.

The principle is also known from air-conditioning systems, whose condensed water usually drains away unused.

Bayadha is located at the last point in western Tunisia, on the border with Algeria.

There is no access to clean drinking water there and with this machine we are showing that we can provide the students with water.

The next goal is to get five machines and place them on the roof to feed the students.

Cumulus has not yet been put into operation.

The startup is still awaiting government approval.

If the project works, it would be a big step forward.

The young students don't use much water in winter, but now in summer everyone has to take a bottle of water from home because the water here is not safe, not regulated and contains many parasites since it is rainwater is.

The generator can produce up to 30 liters of drinking water per day.

Cumulus' long-term goal is to contribute to drinking water supply throughout North Africa.
