Faced with European economic sanctions, Russia is responding by reducing its gas deliveries to its European customers.

The Russian giant Gazprom, which reduced its daily gas delivery capacity to Germany by more than 40% on Tuesday, reduced its gas deliveries to the Italian group Eni by 15% for the day on Wednesday.

Eni confirms that Gazprom has communicated to it a limited reduction in gas supplies for today's day, equivalent to approximately 15%

," a spokesperson told AFP, specifying that the "

reasons for this reduction have not been notified at this stage

”.

Russian gas exports to Europe have been steadily declining since the start of sanctions against Russia.

Gazprom has interrupted its gas deliveries to several European customers who refused to pay in rubles.

About half of the foreign companies that have entered into a gas supply contract with Gazprom have opened a ruble account with Gazprombank to honor their payments, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak assured in mid-May, quoted by Ria Novosti.

The Italian energy giant Eni, 30.3% controlled by the state, had thus opened an account in euros and another in rubles with Gazprombank in order to settle its payments for the supply of Russian gas at the end of May, thereby complying with Moscow's demands.

Payment was made in euros, according to the group.

Italy is very dependent on Russian gas because it imports 95% of the gas it consumes, of which around 40% came from Russia in 2021. Visiting Israel, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi pleaded on Tuesday in favor of greater energy autonomy: “

We want to reduce our dependence on Russian gas

,” he said.

We are working together to use the gas resources of the Eastern Mediterranean and to develop renewable energies

”.

For its part, the German government assured Tuesday that despite the 40% drop in deliveries “

security of supply (was) still guaranteed

” for the country.

Despite the military intervention in Ukraine, Germany continues to import almost 35% of its gas from Russia, even though this proportion was 55% before February.
