Being energy self-sufficient has a number of advantages.

No wonder that many places are now thinking about how buildings can be heated in the future, for example.

This is also an issue in Rottenbuch.

Several farmers and foresters are planning to set up a local heating supply based on wood chips.

Rottenbuch – The first meetings of all those involved have already taken place.

"The will is there," confirms Mayor Markus Bader.

"But the whole thing only pays off if we find enough buyers per meter." Because heat is lost from the power plant along the pipes - too long distances where there are no users would be fatal.

Two large consumers still heat with gas

Due to the structure of Rottenbuch, it is hardly possible to supply the entire town with a central system.

Therefore, the current considerations are focused on the monastery courtyard, where there are two large consumers, the municipality and Regens Wagner, who still heat with gas.

As Bader emphasizes, there is still a lot to check and calculate.

It is important that the system "is designed in such a way that we can fill it with Rottenbucher material".

Only wood chips from local forests should be used.

"That would be leftovers from the forestry industry," describes Bader.

"That's the only way it's ecological."

"We're just getting started, but we're optimistic"

Because if the wood had to be procured from other regions, there would again be dependencies and long transport routes.

On top of that, the whole thing should also pay off financially.

If the local supply works, “that would be great cooperation” – local agriculture and forestry would be supported, there would be regional added value and something would be done to protect the climate.

“We are optimistic,” says Bader.

"But still at the very beginning.

It's a long way.” The local heating supply could be organized via a cooperative in which the investors come together.

Interested parties can still get involved in the project.

The farmers and foresters already have two locations in mind for the power plant – but Bader does not reveal where these are located.

First find out how much wood chips you need

Stefan Loth is one of the people driving the project.

Like Bader, the Rottenbuch farmer and forest owner is still reluctant to make specific statements.

First you have to clarify how much wood chips would be needed.

Next, talks would be held with Regens Wagner.

If the foundation signals interest, "we would have a large, secure customer," says Loth.

Then they will sit down with the other forest owners to find out whether the need can be covered from their own stock.

According to Loth, solar power could also be an additional option to get by with less wood chips during the summer months.

"You have to check that."

There is a lot going on in Rottenbuch at the moment: After Regens Wagner moved out, the Hubertusstuben are empty
