Opinion | Ganz and the Politicization of the Army: Chapter 2 | Israel today

2022-06-15T20:57:35.844Z

As the majority of the Israeli public moves to the right, the importance of controlling the appointments at the top of the IDF in the eyes of the left only increased. • Ganz's decision to advance the procedures for the appointment of the next chief of staff

After Gantz completes the operation to take over the military broadcasting station, he increases strength and rushes to the next fortified target.

The Defense Minister's decision to advance, without any material reason, the procedures for appointing the next IDF Chief of Staff, breaks a new record in the politicization of the defense system, and in an attempt to harness the army to serve the political whim of the appointing minister.

The Israeli public is not so innocent.

We also knew before that defense ministers who came from left-wing parties have always seen senior appointments in the IDF as a particularly effective way to advance their worldview, and those of the officers who are partners in it, or at least pretend to be partners. They did not bother to hide the rule that only their well-being - or those who disguise themselves - are promoted.

Unfortunately, it did not stop with the political upheaval, what is more, in many of the governments formed by the prime ministers of the Likud, the position of defense minister was given to the coalition partner from the left, and he continued to act in the IDF as his own.

As the majority of the Israeli public moves to the right, the importance of controlling the appointments at the top of the IDF in the eyes of the left only increased. , Preferably one that until a moment ago was chief of staff.

And in order for such a chief of staff to be available when necessary, his appointment must be made in good time, a few years before he is assigned to the political system as an "AS" that breaks equality.

This is how a number of chiefs of staff came into our lives, and for each of them - even before his formal release from military service (!) - it was said that he was the new hope of the left.

After all, the political opinions of the senior champions should be a secret kept in their hearts.

But whoever pushed for the appointment of those champions in the first place knew very well what their opinions were, and took them into account at the time of the appointment, in the sense of "the seeds in tears will be reaped."

The defense ministers sowed the appointments, and a few years later their parties cut the crop, in the form of popular candidates on whose shoulders the "holy mission" was tasked to defeat Benjamin Netanyahu and the right.

There is no other way, other than the political bias, to explain the arrival of the most senior ranks in the IDF of people like Yair Golan, who began to utter remarks while still in uniform, or like some of his colleagues, extremists like him, but less chatty.

Even if we take into account the history of the appointments of chiefs of staff, Gantz's current act is particularly troubling. Others honesty is rather uplifting, but in this case - it only exposes the shame of the defense minister, who knows, like everyone else, that his government is facing an inevitable collapse, and therefore wants to make the appointment before he steps off the stage and is replaced by someone else.

Ganz's puzzling move undermines the IDF and the public's trust in the correctness of the process of electing army commanders, but in addition to harming the entire system - it causes real and immediate damage to the two chiefs of staff: the current chief of staff, Aviv Kochavi, and his successor, who will be elected by Gantz. The procedures for appointing the next chief of staff will put the army in the shadow of two commanders for a long time, and in a hierarchical system - this is a recipe for confusion and trouble.

As a result, the authority of Lt. Col. Kochavi will be violated, for not every injustice on his part.

If it were a mediocre chief of staff, this price could still be justified. But there is a broad consensus around Kochavi's skills and achievements. At the same time, the next chief of staff will have an image of a hasty political appointment, His servant.
