The British newspaper, The Telegraph, revealed the arrest of two former American soldiers who participated in the fight against Russian forces in Ukraine during a battle outside the northeastern city of Kharkov last week.
The two mercenaries, Alexander Drake, 39, and Andy Hoen, 27, have been captured and are believed to be the first two US soldiers to end up as prisoners of the Russian army, joining a growing number of Western military volunteers captured by Russian forces, including at least two Britons.
The newspaper stated that the arrest of the Americans would be diplomatically sensitive, assuming that the Kremlin would use it as evidence that America had become directly involved in the war.
For his part, a spokesman for the US State Department confirmed to the newspaper that the department is aware of reports of US citizens captured in Ukraine and that Washington is closely monitoring the situation and is in contact with the Ukrainian authorities, but due to privacy considerations, we have no comment.
