Recently, the government has been making great efforts to develop Lantau Island, including building houses on top of the MTR Siu Ho Wan Depot, expanding the new town in Tung Chung, and building the third runway of the airport, which has caused a rapid increase in the flow of people in the area. However, at present, only Tung Chung Road is on the north and south Lantau. connection, in the event of an accident on the road, land traffic will be paralyzed.

According to the Lantau Transport Feasibility Study conducted by the Civil Works Exhibition Agency earlier, the latest document shows that Tung Chung Road is the only land road to connect the North and South Lantau. Therefore, it is necessary to build a new road to connect the North and South areas. The authorities initially proposed to build a tunnel on the island. Including the Oi Shan Tunnel, the tunnel connecting Mui Wo, Siu Ho Wan or Discovery Bay, and the construction of a new bridge at Oi Shan Road, etc., and the existing roads should be improved.

The report also recommends improving the Man Kok Tsui Pier and building a new pier on the South Lantau waterfront.

According to the latest documents of the Land Development Office, the traffic data in the past few years reflect that on South Lantau, Tung Chung Road, South Lantau Road, Yi Shan Road (connecting South Lantau Road and Sham Wa Road), and Tai O Road (connecting Sham Wa Road and Tai O Road), the daily usage is only half of the original design capacity, but currently only rely on Tung Chung Road to connect North and South Lantau, in the event of a traffic accident, it will not be able to take other land routes, and can only be connected to the urban area by water. Study other land options for connecting North and South Lantau, especially tourist hotspots Tai O and Mui Wo.

Proposed Yishan Tunnel and Bridge

The authorities preliminarily evaluated 6 proposals to connect Tung Chung and Tai O, and considered it more feasible to build the Keung Shan Tunnel and the New Bridges at Keung Shan Road (New Bridges at Keung Shan Road). The tunnel runs underground through the South Lantau Country Park, and connects Shek Pik and Tai O Road via Yishan. The latter is constructed with two bridges each about 350 meters long, across the current Yishan sharp bend.

The authorities have also proposed 4 options to connect North Lantau and Mui Wo, of which three can be initially "passed", including the construction of the "Siu Ho Wan-Mui Wo Tunnel" and the "Discovery Bay-Mui Wo Tunnel", both of which will pass through the border. Passing through the North Lantau Country Park (extension), but the former is to connect Mui Wo and Siu Ho Wan, the latter is to connect to Discovery Bay, and an additional road will be built to connect to Mui Wo; the other plan is to connect the existing Pak Kung Au and the old Tung Chung Road "Sheng Na" in Changsha, which is currently temporarily closed for maintenance access only.

In addition, the document also proposes to improve the road sections of South Lantau Road, Oi Shan Road and Tai O Road, including widening the proposed three roads and improving the lane bends. However, the main roads in the area are all located in the country park area. Therefore, when carrying out the works, Environmental and ecological impacts should be considered and two major principles are recommended, including avoiding extensive hillside excavation and filling, etc., and minimizing impacts on sensitive environments such as country parks, private land, and existing and planned structures , utilities and facilities, etc.

In addition to land, the report also covers waterway traffic. It is recommended to improve the existing Man Kok Tsui Pier and build a new pier on the waterfront of South Lantau, including Tong Fuk, Cheung Sha and Pui O. The Man Kok Tsui Pier Improvement Works has been completed in the second Under the "Wharf Improvement Scheme" of the current period.

If the proposal is finally accepted, the newly built pier in South Lantau will provide a hop-on / hop-off shuttle service, but the proposal is still subject to further study.
