Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday assured his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin of Beijing's support for "
sovereignty
" and "
security
" in a telephone conversation, state media reported.

China is willing to pursue mutual support with Russia on issues of sovereignty, security, as well as other issues of fundamental interests and major concerns
," Xi Jinping said in a statement quoted by Reuters. New China news agency.
The minutes of the exchange, however, do not link these remarks to any specific example, such as Ukraine or Taiwan.
The last known call between Xi Jinping and the Russian president dates back to the end of February, the day after the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces.
No conviction
China has refused since the February 24 intervention to use the word "
invasion
" to describe the military operation launched by Moscow and blames the conflict on the United States and NATO.
Close to the Kremlin, with which it wants to form a common front against the United States, the Chinese authorities have also refrained from condemning the Russian invasion.
Three weeks before the start of the war, the Chinese president received Vladimir Putin in Beijing, on the sidelines of the opening of the 2022 Winter Olympics. They then proclaimed "
boundless friendship
" between China and Russia and signed a multitude of agreements, particularly in the field of gas.
