The idea that Russia could go from “Khrushchev-style” talk to “Hitler-style” annexations was unimaginable in the mid-2000s (…) For the United States to accept to see Russia for what it was , that is, an enemy reconstituted and ready for revenge, would have led to the recognition that the Cold War had not been won by America at all, but rather put on hold, during the reign of Yeltsin of the 1990s and then revived under Putin in the 2000s. This would have involved recognizing that Putin's nationalist resurgence had not been handled politically or militarily as it should have been by the United States.
