The mini pigs at Nuremberg Zoo recently had offspring.

A total of six piglets saw the light of day.

Nuremberg - There are offspring again in Nuremberg Zoo, this time among the mini pigs, also known as mini pigs.

The city of Nuremberg announced this in a press release on June 14th.

Tiergarten Nuremberg: Offspring of the mini pigs - "Teacup Pigs"

According to this, a total of six piglets were born at the end of May 2022, two males and four females.

The young animals are now very active and are easy to see for visitors.

Shortly after birth, the mini pigs are only around 15 centimeters tall "and therefore hardly larger than a teacup," the city continues.

In the English-speaking world, they are therefore also referred to as "teacup pigs".

There are currently eight mini-pigs in total in the Nuremberg Zoo - in addition to the six newborn piglets, a sow and a boar.

The minipigs usually have offspring once a year in the Tiergarten.

Many species are threatened with extinction.

The Nuremberg Zoo is therefore breeding in a targeted manner - and has now reported a double success.

Many visitors find the animals particularly cute because of their snub nose, wide eyes and round forehead.

For species-appropriate husbandry, however, the animals need an outdoor enclosure," emphasizes the zoo.

In addition to sufficient space in the garden, shaded areas are also necessary.

Precautions in miniature pigs for African swine fever

Due to African swine fever (ASF), the minipigs in the zoo are currently not allowed to be fed or petted.

It is a viral disease that is harmless to humans and other animal species, but deadly to pigs.

There has not yet been a case in Bavaria, but the disease has already arrived in other federal states.

The minipigs have been on display in the children's zoo in the south-eastern part of the zoo since 2017.

Depending on the breeding line, full-grown minipigs can weigh up to 60 kilograms.
